(Back when we went to the theaters to see movies? You remember.) A low Cinemascore grade is usually less about the quality of the motion picture than how accurately the films were marketed; ads for “It Comes at Night” promised a jump-scare fright-fest, and instead, audiences got a grim chamber piece about certain death.

And if you’ve seen the film, you’ll understand why it’s safe to say that music plays a huge role in the Trey Edward Shults’ latest feature. And speaking to The Film Stage, the director talks about that, and specifically how Kanye West’s music influenced so much of “Waves.”

Without going into spoilers (as many have yet to see the film), there’s a point in “Waves” where the character of Tyler (played by Kelvin Harrison, Jr) goes through a crucial situation, with the song “I Am A God” by Kanye West playing in the film.

In production notes provided to the press, the filmmaker best known for the indie darling “Krisha” says his film “exudes an ebb and flow resembling how I think life truly feels at times.” O.K., that is a bit of an obvious observation for an adult to make but we’ll admit it can be a jarring life lesson for a teenager.

While there are many (myself included) that love Trey Edward Shults‘ psychological thriller, there are some people that are turned off by the pacing and the fact that despite hinting at something in the woods, nothing actually comes at night. That being said, Shults appears to be making a zig when you thought he might zag for his next film.

His rise from beatmaker to one of the biggest rappers in the world is tailor-made for a rags to riches big screen biopic, and it’s only a matter of time until that happens. And when that moment arrives, an unlikely director is putting his hat in the ring to land the job of making it.

Speaking with The Independent, “It Comes At Night” director Trey Edward Shults revealed that he’d love to make a movie about Kanye West, and he’s eager to convince the rapper he’s the right person to bring it to life.

(Only I’ve seen it, though, and agree with Rodrigo Perez’ review.) From there, it’s onto our larger topic, writer/director Trey Edward Shults‘ sophomore film (after AYT favorite “Krisha” from last year) “It Comes At Night,” which despite its misleading marketing (it’s not a monster movie, more a European-flavored horror/survivalist art picture) is a strong effort nonetheless.

And it’s the independent/arthouse fright flicks that are increasingly providing some of the best big screen terror out there, which is why “It Comes At Night” is one we can’t wait to see.

“Krisha” director Trey Edward Shults is behind the camera for this one, which stars a pretty great cast in Joel Edgerton, Riley Keough, Christopher Abbott, and Carmen Ejogo, about a man protecting his family from an evil outside his door.

From massive blockbusters to Oscar winners, from cult hits to tiny indies, the last twelve months has seen a wealth of exciting new filmmakers emerge, leaving us with plenty of faith for the medium’s future (even if we have to watch their next movies huddled together on a break in President Trump’s copper mines).

And now Shults is making his next move, and it’ll find him moving into some new territory.
