One of Arnold Schwarzenegger‘s first entries into comedy, the 1988 film “Twins” is odd. After mainly being known as an action star,  Schwarzenegger took the plunge into comedy for this oddball couple film. It was the first time working with “Ghostbusters” director Ivan Reitman and comedic actor Danny DeVito and the trio would reunite for the less than stellar comedy “Junior.” However, Schwarzenegger would strike gold again when he worked with Reitman on “Kindergarten Cop.”

More than 30 years after the release of “Twins,” the long-gestating sequel is on the horizon, with “Triplets” finally moving forward with Reitman back as director alongside original co-stars Schwarzenegger and DeVito as Julius and Vincent Benedict returning.

First off, let’s be clear. While “woke” is often weaponized by the bad faith right as a pejorative—something that will “cancel” you— the entire concept of inclusivity and expanding compassion and understanding for everyone, but specifically the marginalized, overlooked, and those you may not have afforded empathy towards in the past, is inherently a good thing, period.

But when it comes to comedy—often, but not exclusively the arena of mocking, sneering, derision, shocks, provocation, jests, and more— the entire institution these days either feels like it’s a victim under attack, often ready to cry about cancellation, or unsure of what they want to say and how to say it, lest they offend someone.

These days, raunchy studio comedies pride themselves on three necessities: swearing, dick jokes, and anarchy-level chaos. Some recent favorites, including “This is the End” and “The Nice Guys,” succeeded beautifully because they used those components to service the story, characters, location and/or genre, not merely to carry the overall film to the finish line. But such winners are rarities. That’s because, more often than not, you usually end up with something like “Fist Fight,” a loud, broad, meandering, overcompensating misfire consisting of mayhem, delirium, foul language and verbal hostility with little substance.

You don’t have to overcomplicate the premise of a movie when you put Ice Cube and Charlie Day in it. And the filmmakers behind “Fist Fight” certainly aren’t overworking their brains with this upcoming comedy that essentially wonders: what if Ice Cube and Charlie Day really didn’t get along?

Directed by Richie Keen (“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”), and featuring a pretty good ensemble that includes Christina Hendricks, Jillian Bell, Tracy Morgan, and Dennis Haysbert the story follows two teachers will meet outside by the basketball courts at recess and fight, basically.
