The American Theater Wing handed out the 72nd Tony Awards on Sunday night and the big winners were “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” and “The Band’s Visit” taking Best Play and Best Musical respectively.  “Angels in America” and, in a surprise, “Once On This Island” took Best Revival of a Play and Best Revival of a Musical.

In a ceremony hosted by Josh Groban and Sara Bareilles, “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” won six honors including Best Direction, Best Scenic Design, Best Lighting Design, Best Sound Design and Best Costumes in a Play.

The nominations for the 72nd Tony Awards were revealed this morning and proved that Hollywood can dominate the Great White Way more than ever.  Granted, film and TV properties making bank on Broadway is nothing new but this year three of the four Best Musical nominees are based on movie or TV shows (“Mean Girls,” “Frozen,” and “Spongebob Squarepants: The Broadway Musical”) and three of the five Lead Actor in a Play nominees were nominated or won Oscars over the past three years (Andrew Garfield, Denzel Washington and Mark Rylance).

Breaking news, Kevin Spacey will not be returning to host the Tony Awards this June.  Yes, that’s not exactly shocking considering his current standing following allegations made in the wake of the #MeToo movement especially with one particular stunning charge from noted Broadway star Anthony Rapp.  That being said, considering it was the worst rated Tonys since 2012 he probably wasn’t returning under any scenario.  Today, CBS announced the Tonys were going in a new direction and that Sara Bareilles And Josh Groban will team up to host instead.
