They’re starting to schedule film festivals again, for some reason, so it’s a fine week to check out some festival selections from home, including the latest from Olivier Assayas (Venice, TIFF, and NYFF 2019) and Céline Sciamma (Cannes, TIFF, NYFF 2019), the Audience Award winner from Sundance 2018, and a music documentary from Slamdance 2019.

PARK CITY – Credit’s due where credit’s due.  With “The Happy Prince” first time director and screenwriter Rupert Everett shows cinematic skill in fashioning a period biopic about the last days of Oscar Wilde.  The actor’s passion project, which debuted at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, looks appropriately lush thanks to the efforts of Everett’s crew including cinematographer John Conroy and production designer Brian Morris.  Everett has even recruited notable names – and a few former co-stars – such as Colin Firth, Emily Watson and Tom Wilkinson for significant roles.

We’ve seen many movies depict the presence of the KKK in southern states, even in the organization’s later years when the group was shunned and went further underground. A socially conscious movie like “Burden” must be commended for “going there” despite the old school, preachy theatrics that it deploys. Andrew Heckler‘s film, based on a 1996 incident that happened in South Carolina, tries to tackle tired ground that has been explored more thoughtfully and artfully in the past.

If “The Catcher Was Spy” weren’t based on a true story, you’d most likely hear people say that it was far-fetched and implausible. The story of Moe Berg, a major-league baseball player whose double life had him spying on the Germans during WWII, was originally an extraordinary book by Nicholas Dawidoff, but much like many adaptations, the translation from page to screen just doesn’t work.

TORONTO – In this age of Trump where any statement is somehow a fact regardless of the truth, there should be something incredibly poignant about “Denial,” a film about the libel case between Holocaust denier David Irving and historian Deborah E. Lipstadt at the turn of the century. And outside of two fine performances by Tom Wilkinson and Timothy Spall that’s pretty much all director Mick Jackson’s on the nose courtroom drama has going for it.
