This is a category ripe for an upset. With four of the five nominees from Netflix, we’re instead picking the sole HBO contender, “Bad Education.” It has a passionate fan base in the industry and the Netflix titles may just split too much of the vote. Of course, that split could also mean that a surprise such as “American Son,” “Dolly Parton Heartstrings” or “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt the Movie” could surprise.

There is a movie debuting this weekend that will fundamentally surprise you.  That will make you question how you could so fundamentally prejudge a genre.  No, it’s not the blockbuster fan-fiction mess of “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” or the unfathomable lack of, um, cinematic perspective in “Cats.”  (Although, frankly, your potential disappointment in both could lead to genuine “surprise.”)  No, in this case, it’s the supposed feel-good (aka “inspirational”) dogsled movie “Togo,” a Disney Studios movie premiering on Disney+.

The Writers Guild of America announced the television and news nominees for the 2020 WGA Awards and programs such as “Watchmen,” “Succession,” “Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” “Dead to Me,” “Pen 15,” “Russian Doll” and “Veep” all earned multiple nods.  One show that was obviously missing was the highly lauded and Emmy-winning “Fleabag.”  One of the requirements for the WGA Awards is that you must be a member of the guild for your show to qualify.

Disney+ is here, and people love it. Since the streaming service debuted last month, people have been obsessing over the selection of TV series and films that have been available to watch, including “The Mandalorian” and the latest remake, “Lady and the Tramp.” But the Mouse House isn’t resting on its laurels and already has its next major film release on deck, “Togo.”

As seen in the new trailer for “Togo,” the film follows the true story of a dogsled trainer in Alaska that must rely on his lead dog, Togo, to help him survive a treacherous journey to delivery a serum that will help a small town survive a deadly epidemic.

Friday evening Disney + took the streaming world by storm with its two-hour presentation at D23 Expo, and it was the first moment the sheer amount of IP’s the Mouse owns genuinely sunk in. Everything from Marvel, to Star Wars, to The Muppets, even The Simpson’s theme graced us with its presence while waiting for the panel to begin – which admittedly still needs an adjustment period.

ANAHEIM – Sitting through the D23 Expo’s 90-minute session previewing Disney Plus, the Walt Disney Company’s new streaming service, it was hard not to be stuck with just how much content it was launching with. It’s one thing to hear a report of Disney CEO Bob Iger discussing it on a conference call with investors or to see news reports on new projects over time, but in person is something else.
