Last month, Danielle Deadwyler missed out on a Best Actress nomination at the 2023 Academy Awards for her role in as activist Mamie Till-Mobley in “Till,” to the ire of the film’s director, Chinonye Chukwu. Not long after the Academy released its nominations, Chukwu took to Instagram to protest her film not receiving any at all. Chukwu called the snub “unabashed misogyny towards Black women.” Now, Deadwyler follows up on her director’s comments.

Every year, there are “snubs” discussed after the Academy announces the Oscar nominations. Most of the time, these snubs happen when there are just so many talented people and only five slots to recognize them. Sometimes, the lack of diversity and inclusivity gets brought up, as has already been done this year with the all-male Best Director category. However, there’s one film that was snubbed by the Academy this year that has really struck a nerve with the filmmaker behind the project.

We all love actors, directors, music, and all of it, but cinema is obviously a visual medium first and foremost, and boy, do we love a handsome, nice-to-look-at picture. Cinematography usually gets turned into “pretty pictures,” what is the most colorful, the most sun-dappled, etc. And sure, some of that is represented here (“Aftersun”), but what represents “Best Cinematography,” to us, should be as layered, complex, and meaningful as cinema itself.

As we are seeing this film festival season return to what we all knew and loved pre-pandemic, we are so excited to have one of the longest-running U.S.-based film festivals return for its 60th year (yes, 60!!). The non-competitive New York Film Festival has a lot of great films, as always, this year which includes multiple films by Hong Sangsoo,  a 50th Anniversary screening of  “Solaris” complete with a live musical accompaniment, “Master Gardener” by Paul Schrader, and “Decision to Leave” by Park Chan-wook.

The 60th annual New York Film Festival starts this week, running from September 30 to October 16.
