As the blockbuster season winds down, August is always an odd time for new releases. While there are still a few tentpole-style films on the radar, starting off with this week’s David Leitch-directed, star-studded “Bullet Train,” there’s plenty more to explore on the smaller scale. From prequels being quietly released on streamers to multiple festival hits making way to theatrical releases and George Miller’s return, the schedule feels particularly eclectic.

Putting together the 100 Most Anticipated Films list is a beast in any year. Still, in the new accelerated age of streaming with HBO Max, Apple TV+, Amazon, Netflix, and all the new players popping up every single day, it seems, the task becomes more and more daunting and nearly impossible (we could have easily gone to 200 this year).

So we’re post-COVID, but oops, not-yet post-COVID, but somehow movies have survived, even if the theatrical market becomes a more challenging and riskier gambit.

The film was expensive, production was shut down three different times, and the big, bloated, ambitious movie was so risky, it had the execs at Warner Bros. extremely nervous which led to many worried set visits in Australia at the time by the studio brass.
