With yesterday’s announcement of only one actor joining “Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery,” it seemed as if we were done with the big casting reveals. Well, not quite.

According to The Wrap, Thomas Haden Church is the next actor to join Rian Johnson’s “Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery.” Haden Church joins an all-star cast that already includes Josh O’Connor, Cailee Spaeny, Andrew Scott, Kerry Washington, Glenn Close, Jeremy Renner, and Josh Brolin.

As we saw with “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” everything is now possible in the multiverse. Sony’s ‘No Way Home’ utilized the infinite possibilities of the multiverse to reunite its three Spider-Men, Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland, and its nostalgia power was a smashing success, grossing nearly $2 billion dollars worldwide in the middle of the pandemic. And though it was once thought of as a kind of one-off, with Marvel reportedly doing a similar kind of thing for “Deadpool & Wolverine”—turning the film into a nostalgic throwback and goodbye for 20th Century Fox’s version of Marvel’s universe—the possibility of any of these Spider-Men coming back for more feels like a real chance.

The massive success of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” in theaters and “The Last of Us” on HBO means one thing is certain: every studio on Earth wants a few more video game adaptations on their schedule. While awful versions of hit games are certainly going to be fast-tracked in the coming months (pending the end of the strike, of course), the truth is that Sony already had a number of productions waiting in the wings after Joel & Ellie exited stage left, including the upcoming “Gran Turismo” in theaters and “Twisted Metal” on Peacock.

HBO has really expanded its original content offerings over recent years. In the current original content arms race that is also referred to as The Streaming Wars, HBO finds itself trying to keep up with the likes of Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon. And in doing so, the “specialness” of each series the network puts out is a bit diminished. And that’s how I’m choosing to segue into the discussion about the new season of “Divorce.”

Created by comedic powerhouse Sharon Horgan (Amazon‘s “Catastrophe” — watch it) and starring two long time beloved actors with Sarah Jessica Parker and Thomas Haden Church, the first season of “Divorce” didn’t bring the hype that HBO seemed to be betting on. With Parker back on the channel that brought her to the spotlight with the immeasurably inspiration “Sex and the City” (its legacy somewhat tarnished due to the ill conceived film spin offs), it should’ve been a sure fire bet, drawing in both her older crowd, fans of the series, and newbies who were intrigued in seeing an “American Sweetheart” type play someone with a bit more of a foul tongue.

And then there are movies like “Crash Pad,” which somehow get made without any problems, even though they feel like a low-grade rehash of about a half dozen movies you’ve seen before. Oh wait, maybe that’s exactly why they get made.

If you haven’t seen it, “Catastrophe” is one of the best things on TV — the Channel 4/Amazon series, co-written by Sharon Horgan and Rob Delaney, is one of the most honest and funny takes on the romantic comedy in a long time, full of both truthful moments and amazing swearing. The second season hit Amazon recently, and it sounds like it’s going to be a little while before the next one, but to serve as a stopgap, and hopefully something more, Horgan has a new series coming to HBO in the fall, and the first teaser just arrived for it.

Variety has reported in bare bones fashion that Thomas Haden Church had joined the film, but have provided no details on what role he might play.

Earlier today we heard news that Amy Adams was weighing an offer to play the female lead role, but apparently she’s on a shortlist of actresses, so if she passes — maybe to play alongside Jason Segel in the new “Muppets” movie — there could be many other contenders (we’re thinking Zooey Deschanel as her second-ever film role ever was in Crowe’s “Almost Famous.”) The trades don’t mention Adams at all and we suspect it’s because she’s still mulling over the role and it hasn’t hit the negotiation stage.

Even though Friedkin’s run in the 2000s has been spotty we do have some hope for this one. The director is adapting the Tracy Letts play of the same name. The plot follows a brother (Hirsch) and sister who hire a crooked cop, the titular Killer Joe (McConaughey), to kill their mother. Letts also penned the play “Bug” which Friedkin adapted and which hit theaters in 2006 only to be overlooked by most filmgoers.
