TIFF ’10 Review: Gregg Araki’s ‘Kaboom’ Is Like ‘Saved By The Bell’ Meets ‘Lost Highway’ On Ecstasy

Sophomoric, silly and pretty much a high-concept sitcom in origin, production value and tone, Gregg Araki’s candy-coated “Kaboom” is ridiculous, ultra-camp and likely only appeals to his small band of constituents (and the seal-trained TIFF audiences that will laugh at anything), but the wacky picture admittedly does contain a few silly delights.

Kicking off with a strange, clue-laden dream, the absurd rom-com/murder mystery stars Thomas Dekker as Smith, a bisexual Californian college student about to go down a rabbit hole of cults, conspiracies and general weirdness.

David Hayter To Make Directorial Debut With ‘Wolves’

After false starts and missed opportunities with films like “Black Widow” and “Watchmen” fanboy fave screenwriter David Hayter (“X2,” “Watchmen”) is finally set to make his directorial debut with the supernatural drama “Wolves.”

The modestly budgeted $18 million dollar film is described by Hayter as “’Twilight’ with a bit more bite to it, and without abstinence.” As you might have guessed, the film is about werewolves, and Hayter has “de-constructed past werewolf films, took out the mythology that haunted the screen adaptations, and found a way to make it a metaphor for a teen maturing sexually into adulthood, at the age when young men howl at the moon.” Essentially it sounds like yet another creatures-with-feelings film but with more sex and blood.

Much-Hyped German Film, ‘Baader Meinhof Complex’ Fails To Ignite Box-Office In Native Deutschland

The much-hyped German film, “The Baader Meinhof Complex” failed to light up the box-office in its native home. The film which has been picked by Germany as its official Foreign Oscar representation failed to beat “Wall-E” which just opened in Deutschland. Produced by Bernd Eichinger, the film’s disappointing opening couldn’t even match the producers last films’ openings; arthouse pics like “Downfall,” and “Perfume — The Story of a Murderer.” ‘Baader Meinhof’ met controversy earlier this year when it threatened Germany reporters and journalists with a 100, 000 Euro fine if they wrote about the film before its September 25 German release.
