The heat may be starting to die down, but the box office manages to pick up some much needed steam this weekend. Robert Rodriguez‘s long-anticipated “Machete” hopes to slash away the competition, attracting the action fans still hungry for blood after last month’s “The Expendables.” Drew Barrymore stars opposite real-life on/off beau Justin Long in “Going the Distance,” though we still wish she’d find the time to team up with ex-husband Tom Green at some point (jk).

Review: ‘The Winning Season’ Features Another Standout Sam Rockwell Performance In Otherwise Forgettable Dramedy

When we first meet up with the hapless hero of “The Winning Season,” Bill Greaves (Sam Rockwell), he’s busing tables at a T.G.I. Friday’s-like establishment and drinking himself into a stupor. An old friend (Rob Corddry) and current high school principal shows up to make an inexplicable offer for Greaves to become coach of the girls’ basketball team (inexplicable because Greaves gives no indication that he’s either interested or in enough possession of his faculties enough to handle the job).

Sundance Report: A Hot ‘Education’ And A ‘Winning Season’ Sell

The hotly touted breakout film of Sundance ’09 is not one of the name films. It’s a smaller dramedy called, “An Education” that studios, buyers, bloggers, journos and audiences have been going nuts for. Naturally, the film sold, but not to Fox Searchlight, which seemed to be in close-to-final negotiations on the film. Instead Sony Pictures Classics bought the film according to Variety, which apparently came rife with drama when CAA sellers deemed Searchlight‘s bid too low.
