Michael Fassbender Is A Basterd, ‘Watchmen’ DVD And Blu-Ray To Be Release On July 18th, ‘I Sell The Dead’ Trailer

Another poster for “Inglourious Basterds” has been unveiled in the form of a banner at the Cannes Film Festival. The poster features Michael Fassbender who stars as Lt. Archie Hicox, a British Army Officer who joins up with the Basterds. Of course, we’ll keep a lookout for it’s online debut. [ION Cinema]

Warner Home Video have announced that the “Watchmen” DVD and Blu-Ray will see a release on July 28th as well as an Ultimate Edition of “300” which will be out a week earlier.

“Return to Witch Mountain” Bests Box Office Expectations

You know it’s a weak box office weekend when the top movie is a kids film starring The Rock that only grosses $25M. That’s where we’re at this March folks and, frankly, we don’t blame you for blowing the theater off this weekend. When it comes down to “Return to Witch Mountain” or full blue frontal in “The Watchmen” we’ll stay home and watch SNL with not-so-special guest host Tracey Morgan too. Apparently even the geeks stayed home – “The Watchmen” took a huge dive down 67% in ticket sales and making only $18.1M this weekend, but holds steady at #2 pathetically enough.

2009 is about to witness yet another piece of history years in the making (though this one is probably far less important to the kinds of people who fill their days with activities like leaving their homes and speaking to members of the opposite sex). That’s right–after twenty odd years of trying, Hollywood has finally forced Alan Moore‘s “Watchmen” onto screens across the country. This adaptation should probably win the weekend and displace Tyler Perry’s most recent film, which has reigned for the past two weeks.

OK, “Watchmen” is still wagging on the tongues of the film blogosphere this week, the embargoes have apparently been lifted (cause they were broken and there was nothing WB could do to contain the stimulated in-heat nerd herd) and geeks are letting their reviews rip like a fart in second period gym class.

The usual suspect partisan geeks, Hitflix (we love McWeeny, but 4,000 word review??) , CHUD and (shocker) Harry Knowles at Ain’t It Cool news are doing backflips.

Glowing ‘Watchmen’ Review Breaks Embargo; Prompts Blow-Back Review From Non-Geek Viewer

Update: WB has released their first clip/scene of the film online and Defamer says it’s not good. We can’t agree with their reading too much.

The review embargo for Warner Brother’s biggest release this year, “Watchmen,” has been semi-breached by nerdworld blogger Matt Selman, who praised the film, which just happens to based on the graphic novel he possesses a love for that could be described as slightly above average.

Selman said of the adaptation, “Sitting in that screening room and watching the visual world of the Watchmen movie unfold was one of the most powerful experiences I’ve ever had.

Shortcuts: Dev Patel, Kate Winslet, Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Ralph Fiennes All Qualify For The Golden Globes Supporting Role Category

The Golden Globe eligibility committee approved the following submissions for supporting roles, despite the fact that their status as supporting roles is highly debatable: Dev Patel for “Slumdog Millionaire,” Kate Winslet for “The Reader,” Phillip Seymour Hoffman for his performance in “Doubt” and Ralph Fiennes for his performance in “The Duchess” and “The Reader.” [LA Times]

“Watchmen” director Zach Synder reportedly has cut down the running time for the flick once again. The running time now stands at 2 hours and 35 minutes, and if you are quiet enough, you may be able to hear the laments of comic-book nerds everywhere.

‘Watchmen’ Update: 2 Hour 43 Minute Cut & No Prequel Or Sequel For Snyder; More Action Added, Fox Could Block Film

We’re a day or so behind on the “Watchmen” update. Many bloggers and journalists (around 60 people in total) were invited to a preview of the film in Los Angeles earlier this week that featured footage from the film, plus an appearance by Zack Snyder.

Essentially, it’s more pre-press on Warner Brothers part to get journos more interested and apparently it worked hook line and sinker as not only did the usual suspects show up, the sci-fi comic inclined like SlashFilm and First Showing, but people like the New York Times and Variety also showed their faces not wanting to miss out.

“Watchmen” director Zack Snyder will have more than just the Fox/Warner lawsuit to worry about in the upcoming months. The notoriously cantankerous graphic novel creator Alan Moore has said he better get prepared for the pain that’s coming. First off, the legal problems are simply tickling Moore with schadenfreude to no end. “Will the film even be coming out? There are these legal problems now, which I find wonderfully ironic. Perhaps it’s been cursed from afar, from England,” he snickered.

Kevin Smith, the potty-mouthed, juvenile indie director, was given an early screening of Zack Synder’s “Watchman” and guess what? Evidently the comic-book nerd loved it. Apparently it is “fucking astounding.” During one of his many hours (drunken?) spent on the social networking site, Myspace.com, Smith posted that he had seen an early cut of Synder’s film and said that it was one of the best comic book adaptations ever, even better than, gasp…”Sin City.”

My Chemical Romance To Cover Bob Dylan For ‘Watchmen,’ World Implodes

No major disrespect to comic book nerds out there, but Zack Snyder has shit for taste. You can tell he’s a dork, very probably a very nice guy, and yes, he’s super sewn-up with the admittedly impressive visuals, but nerds are generally lacking in the good-taste fromage dept. and it’s no different here (especially when it comes to music). How do we know this? Well for one, “The Watchmen” trailer had that terrible Smashing Pumpkins song that was cheese-or-rama (and he probably thought was rad, most fans didn’t even blink), but more significantly is this near laughable news: My Chemical Romance will cover Bob Dylan’s “Desolation Row” (or “something like that” Synder says) in “Watchmen,” according to MTV’s Splashpage blog.

Zack Snyder Knows Him Some Visual Effects In ‘Watchmen’ Trailer

The much-anticipated trailer for “Watchmen” directed by Zack Snyder is now online (it seems the Empire, who had the exclusive, has been deluged with a traffic onslaught) and man, say what you will about this CGI-heavy filmmaker, but he knows how to translate comic-book looks into spot-on visual effects (we’re sure the trailer will be back up in a sec it’s below; look at the side-by side comparisons above).

The bigscreen trailer is going to be shown during public screenings of “The Dark Knight” this weekend, us critics (*cough*) didn’t get the chance to see it with our viewings.
