Talking on BBC1’s Newsbeat (via MTV) Muse bassist Chris Wolstenholme talked about the difficulty of breaking into the American marketplace and the things that bands must do to get exposure they otherwise wouldn’t receive — such as appearing on the soundtrack to “Twilight: Eclipse” and “New Moon.” “I’m not sure how cool it is to be on those kind of things, but sometimes you’ve just got to get your music out there in different ways,” Wolstenholme said.

If you don’t like kids, it was probably best to stay away from the movie theater this weekend. Between the $60.1 million that top-earner “Despicable Me” brought in and “Toy Story 3″‘s $22 million, your local megaplex likely felt more like a daycare center (shudder). With “Despicable Me,” Universal continues to try to break into the animation market dominated by Pixar, Disney, and DreamWorks, and this is their most successful attempt yet. The Steve Carell-voiced film trounced the previous opening weekends of their earlier films “Coraline” ($16.8 million), “The Tale of Despereaux” ($10.1 million), and “Curious George” ($14.7 million).

“The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” early numbers are in, and while the film’s take doesn’t quite measure up to that of predecessor “New Moon,” anti-Twihards have little reason for joy: ‘Eclipse’ pulled in $262m worldwide in five days, broke the midnight screening record, and its domestic gross was less than the second installment’s by just $3m at that point. Yes, analysts were wrong in predicting exponential growth on the last film’s totals, but in the words of Summit exec Richie Fay: “I think it has a ways to go before we can say it’s falling short.”

So by any reasonable standard “Eclipse” is already huge and now that we’ve passed the halfway point in the five-film franchise, perhaps it’s a good moment to take a look at the Twilight phenomenon and judge whether it’s a tween fad best ignored, like Justin Bieber or Heelys.

Comic book nerds can rest easy, at least for now: “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” didn’t topple “Spider-Man 2″‘s Independence Day record weekend of $88 million. But those hoping for the Summit release to be anything less than a box-office behemoth had better get out their stakes: the supernatural soap swindled teens (and their moms) out of $69 million, just from Friday through today, bringing its total to a beefy $161 million. Even though it boasts a record-breaking 4,468-screen opening, the per-site average is still a healthy $15,443.

In case the long lines outside your local multiplex haven’t tipped you off, “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” opened on Wednesday and it’s huge.

The film shattered midnight screening records on Wednesday night, hauling in nearly $30 million dollars and it looks like the massive crowds didn’t stop coming. The Wednesday tally for the film ended up at $68.5 million. Again, “Twilight: Eclipse” earned $68.5 million in 24 hours. Good lord. That news is certainly making Summit happy because that number is just a touch above the $68 million budget for the film.

So “Twilight: Eclipse” opened on Wednesday, and by lunchtime today it looks like it’ll have already crossed the $100 million barrier (it’s made back its budget in less than three days and is breaking myriad records already) suggesting the appeal of the sparkly teen vampires hasn’t lessened in the 18 months since the first movie opened. While we may not be fans of the series (although in fairness, our reviewer hated “Eclipse” slightly less than the first two), it’s clear that the vampire myth is as compelling as it ever was (Summit, it’s on you to green light some good movies now that you’re extra flush with cash).

Whether your care about the franchise or not, its power and fanbase cannot be denied. “Twilight: Eclipse” opened last night at midnight and proceeded to break the record set by its previous installment “Twilight: New Moon” by taking in $30 million from midnight and 3 AM screenings around the country. We’re guessing a lot of people called in sick this morning.

The haul surpasses the $26.3 million taken in by ‘New Moon’ last fall and now the question remains just how much scratch the film will take in over the long, Independence Day weekend.

As long suspected the fourth installment of the “Twilight” franchise, “Breaking Dawn,” has been broken up ala “Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows” into two separate pictures.

Why make four “Twilight” books into five films? The same reason why seven “Harry Potter” films were broken up into eight films: more bang for the studios buck, after all Summit Entertainment has grossed over $1.1 billion worldwide with the first two films combined.

We’re less than a month away from the release of “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse,” much to the excitement of your little sister and mom, and following the release of the lead single from the soundtrack, Muse’s “Neutron Star Collision,” the soundtrack, which hits stores next Tuesday, is now available for pre-order on the record’s official site.

The whole album was streaming on the same site, but now seems to have been taken down (probably because tech-savvy listeners ripped the songs and they are now all over YouTube).

News that’s almost 24 hours old now! Which in Internet years is like, so two weeks ago.

Regardless, we started writing about the “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn” C-list actors holding out for more money and we thought we’d close that loop.

Actors you may have never heard of unless you’re under 15, Ashley Greene, Kellan Lutz, Peter Facinelli, Jackson Rathbone, Elizabeth Reaser and Nikki Reed (ok you’ve probably heard of Greene and Lutz pictured here who seem to be the C+list stars) were holding out for more money for the fourth and fifth “Twilight” films, presumably because they hadn’t signed on for a fifth film (originally, the four books were only planned as four films).

We need more “Twilight Saga: Eclipse”-approved indie-rock lite, greatest hits compilations like we need a hole in the head, but evidently Chop Shop, the authors of this milquetoast decided one disc of the usual suspects — Band of Horses, Cee-Lo, Muse, Vampire Weekend, etc., who will barely be heard in the film otherwise — was not enough.

There’s now a deluxe edition of the tweeny-aimed soundtrack and it’s not even that deluxe-y as it only features two new tracks; Bombay Bicycle Club, “How Can You Swallow So Much Sleep,” and the Battles song, “The Line.”

The regular and deluxe discs comes out June 8.

As much as the day-long, roll-out announcement for the “Twilight Saga: Eclipse” soundtrack is hyper annoying, lame and sure to fatigue the very people who want to write about the release (not to mention a cheap way of milking promotion), the music is frankly the only thing that keeps us sort of mildly interested in the vampire franchise.

Even though the soundtracks are basically “That’s What I Call Indie Rock” greatest hits compilations for Wal-Mart, Alexandra Patsavas and her team at Chop Shop have managed to wrangle some great exclusive tracks for the series, with Thom Yorke’s “Hearing Damage” and Lykke Li’s “Possibility” from “Twilight: New Moon” being particular standouts.

One of the by-products of the Internet age is that the creative teams on movies, particularly the big franchise ones, are encouraged to have an open, two-way relationship with the fans. Directors like Jon Favreau and Edgar Wright have pioneered this through MySpace, Facebook and Twitter, often offering casting information and first looks at their movies through the web.

David Slade, the director of “Twilight: Eclipse,” discovered the darker side of the closer relationship with fans; after he signed on to that film, an old tweet by the director was uncovered in which he’d written “Twilight drunk?

Remember when it was reported that Bill Condon (“Dreamgirls,” “Kinsey”) was in negotiations to direct the final installment(s) of the Twilight franchise, “Breaking Dawn”?

Well, uhh, as we all expected, he got the gig. Summit sent out a press release confirming his role as director. There’s still no word if “Breaking Dawn” will be broken up into two films presumably because Summit and Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart’s teams are still negotiating those new terms.

Apparently, the new trailer for “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” will debut on Oprah this afternoon instead of on Apple or Yahoo. Such is the power of Oprah we guess.

Anyway, courtesy of TrailerAddict, the new spot is now online and whatever, its everything you expect and nothing more. It features lots of very somber, pale faces speaking in sentences no longer than ten syllables and generally looking like the most Debby Downer teens on the face on the planet.

Update: HitFix has confirmed that David Slade will shooting planned pickup shots and not reshoots, and will not involve any action sequences. A rep for Summit says “the shoot has been planned for months, the picture is not in ‘trouble’ and, in fact, the studio thinks it may be the best of the three so far.” There you have it.

Surprise! “The Twilight Saga” in print form is not quite finished yet, as author Stephenie Meyer has announced that a new novella, “The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner,” will be released on June 5th.

The story revolves around a minor character in the third novel “Eclipse” who is played by fifteen-year-old Jodelle Ferland in the upcoming film adaptation. As the novels are written from protagonist Bella’s perspective, this story will move the narration beyond the main character and examine the life of a newly-made vampire (whose death is featured in “Eclipse,” thankfully, there’s no room for more expansion here).

The hype for this movie was so big that yesterday a ten-second teaser for this trailer somehow set the blogosphere on fire. We don’t get it, but then again we’re not a teenage girl invested in the choice that must be made between a vampire boyfriend or a werewolf boyfriend.

The first teaser trailer for the film understandably focuses on the apparent love triangle between Bella (Kristen Stewart), Edward (Robert Pattinson), and Jacob (Taylor Lautner).

To fans of the original “Predator” hoping that Alan Silvestri would reprise his role as composer for this year’s “Predators” sequel: you’re out of luck. Instead, Film Music News reports that “Iron Man 2” composer John Debney will be supplying the score for the Robert Rodriguez-produced film. Debney has worked with Rodriguez before on “Spy Kids” and “Sin City” as well as a myriad of other films.

No matter what you might think about the “Twilight” series, there is no denying the talent of the esteemed composers up until this point.

March is going to be a big month for tween girls with Robert Pattinson posters on their wall. As we previously reported, WalMart will have the exclusive “fan-edition” DVD and BluRay of “Twilight: New Moon” with a seven minute preview of “Twlight: Eclipse.” However, the wait for fans has is now shorter as Summit has tweeted the trailer will go online the week of March 7th, and hit the big screen in front of Pattinson’s earnest drama, “Remember Me” on March 12th.
