While appearing at the Festival de la Cinémathèque in Paris, France (via Télérama), the filmmaker revealed he has retired from filmmaking after his extended hiatus from the industry that has spanned 14 years. “I am retired,” the 79-year-old Weir said at the French event when asked about his 14-year hiatus from directing films.

From Adam Sandler in “Punch-Drunk Love” to Jenny Slate in “Obvious Child,” watching an actor unpack their public persona in service of a bittersweet love story. In looking back, it’s probably fair to say that “The Truman Show” helped form this appreciation. It was the first time that Jim Carrey dialed down his boundless energy in favor of his character; there are moments in that movie that I still find myself thinking about to this day.

Right now, we’re hurtling toward the millennium and are up to 1998 (you can check out 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996 and 1997 at your leisure), the year in which not one but two meteorites threatened to wipe out humanity but obliterated the box office instead (“Armageddon” and “Deep Impact” were the number 1 and number 6 highest-grossing films that year).

It’s been quite taxing, but these tumultuous times have afforded us an opportunity to reflect thoughtfully on the current events swirling around us. There’s a good chance this thoughtful reflection will continue long after the polls close later today. These are scary, strenuous, exhausting days, but thankfully we have the art of cinema to help us deal with our restless feelings. People are quick to discuss how Orson Welles’ “Citizen Kane” and Alexander Payne’s “Election” helped forecast our current news-cycle streams, but perhaps Peter Weir’s masterful 1998 Oscar-nominated “The Truman Show” is the one that really explains our current situation best.
