Upon a second screening of Coralie Fargeat’s incredible opus “The Substance,” there is one thing that stands out. It’s not Stanislas Reydellet’s stellar production design or the exquisite cinematography from Benjamin Kracun that half a dozen young filmmakers and commercial directors will rip off over the next 18 months. Nor is it Emmanuelle Youchnovski’s runway-friendly costume design that will have everyone hunting for a bold yellow long coat for the Winter.

The 2024 Toronto International Film Festival has come to an end and, as is tradition, the festival announced its annual People’s Choice Award winner. Usually, it’s a movie destined for a Best Picture nomination, something the festival touts proudly, but not this year. Surprisingly, Mike Flanagan‘s “The Life of Chuck,” which is still looking for distribution, won the award.

By all accounts, “The Substance” is one of the year’s most deliciously f*cked up movies. Directed by Coralie Fargeat, the French filmmaker behind the striking rape vengeance thriller, “Revenge,” she returns to confront aging in women and the way society treats women in an audacious cosmetic body horror called “The Substance.”

The film centers on an aging star, played by Demi Moore, who is forced out of her lucrative on-TV aerobics instructor career by her vile and disgusting boss (Dennis Quaid).

And there’s a Toronto alum leading the charge there: Coralie Fargeat, whose sophomore feature (and Cannes favorite) “The Substance” will open the 10-feature section this year.
