As we say with most of the Best of 2018 lists we share each year, narrowing down the choices for any film fan is a bit of a problem. How are you supposed to only list your top 10 when there are probably two or three dozen films that deserve some sort of special recognition? Are you a bit of a snob if you leave out objectively good films like “Black Panther” and “A Star is Born?” Is it jumping on the bandwagon to say “If Beale Street Could Talk” is your Oscar front-runner?

With the flood of reports concerning the films going to fall festivals such as the Toronto International Film Festival, Venice Film Festival, and the Fantastic Fest, it’s difficult to pay much attention to the August film slate when we know that the month that follows signals great offerings along with Oscar season starting.

That being said, despite some slim pickings on the big budgeted, studio films, there’s plenty to choose from as the summer winds down, especially in the independent department.

No summer is complete without a great comedy movie and “The Spy Who Dumped Me” looks like a perfect fit. The title, of course, is a riff on the classic Bond movie “The Spy Who Loved Me.” The early word on this film has been overwhelmingly positive, with several people praising the chemistry between stars Mila Kunis and Kate McKinnon. No surprise there. McKinnon has consistently proved herself as the funniest “Saturday Night Live” cast member and Kunis has been crushing it in studio comedies like “Bad Moms” and “Ted.”
