Some more soundtrack news today that has nothing to do with “Sex And The City 2.”

Indie heavyweights James Mercer (The Shins, Broken Bells) and Isaac Brock (Modest Mouse) have lent their considerably talented hands to the soundtrack of documentary “180° South: Conquerors of the Useless.” Directed by Chris Malloy and produced by Emmett Malloy (the White Stripes tour doc “Under The Great White Northern Lights”), the film retraces Yvon Chouinard’s and Doug Tompkins’ epic 1968 journey to Patagonia.

We’ve already discussed the Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse (née Brian Burton and Mark Linkous) collaboration called Dark Knight Of The Soul (or maybe that’s the album title? They once joked the group would be called Dangerhorse since Sparklemouse was too comical).

The forthcoming album, which still appears to have no release date yet, has a panoply of guest stars including Black Francis (aka Frank Black of the Pixies), Julian Casablancas of the Strokes, Vic Chesnutt, The Flaming Lips, James Mercer of The Shins, Iggy Pop, Gruff Rhys of the Super Furry Animals, Jason Lytle formerly of Grandaddy, Nina Person of the Cardigans and A Camp and Suzanne Vega .

We just received the coolest music promo we’ve received in… forever? Ever? Instead of a press release, we received a poster promo for an upcoming album by Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse (two artists you hopefully know by now, especially the lesser known latter project by Mark Linkous).

The album is called Dark Night Of The Soul and is apparently due later this summer. The list of artists involved is typically great: Black Francis (aka Frank Black of the Pixies), Julian Casablancas of the Strokes, Vic Chesnutt, The Flaming Lips, James Mercer of The Shins, Iggy Pop, Gruff Rhys of the Super Furry Animals, Jason Lytle formerly of Grandaddy, Nina Person of the Cardigans and A Camp, Suzanne Vega and… filmmaker David Lynch?

We’ve repeatedly referred to “500 Days of Summer” as “The Shins of indie movies” and, upon reviewing the recently revealed soundtrack, it seems we were right, at least musically speaking. It contains every imaginable twee-as-fuck indie rock song EXCEPT something from The Shins (who are still so tainted by that “Garden State” mention that they’re not permitted to place their songs prominently in any indie films until 2020 according to direct orders from Jesus – but he was wearing a trucker hat at the time so the binding legality is obviously questionable).

These are the “offbeat” and “quirky” romance movies places like Stereogum, Pitchfork and the younger movie crowd tend to adore and we must admit we anticipate and even enjoy many of them too (of the above, “The Go-Getter” is our fave and the least indie offensive), but it’s undeniable that some of these “indie hipster” films can be obnoxious, sickeningly twee and cringe-inducing in their emo-ness.

The Playlist generally trades in factual information, but while the cat’s away the mice will play. As a concession to the owner of this blog we’ll start with the facts before we move on to our fanciful wonderings. IMDB’s cast listing for the John Krasinski adapted and directed labor of love flick “Brief Interviews With Hideous Men”, from the David Foster Wallace short story collection, includes beloved indie rocker Ben Gibbard in his feature film debut.

Three years after providing every lazy music writer with a “Garden State”-themed lede in their Shins pieces, Natalie Portman decided to get into the mouthing off about music game again with the charity mixtape Big Change: Songs for FINCA (Foundation for International Community Assistance) which she curated and includes 16 tracks from artists like Beirut, Tokyo Police Club, Norah Jones, Rogue Wave, Antony & the Johnsons, and exclusive tracks from M.
