Hulu landed themselves a bona fide hit late last year with “Runaways,” a Marvel comic-turned-TV show. Unlike Netflix and their grittier slate of “Daredevil,” “Luke Cage,” et al, “Runaways” focuses on a group of enhanced teenagers and their struggles with their parents…who also happened to be supervillains. As the second season gears up, questions about the town’s secret cult, blood sacrifices, living dinosaurs, and a budding lesbian romance abound.

Remember when you were a teenager and you thought your parents were so evil? Well, for the kids in “Marvel’s Runaways,” that’s actually true. Runaways has been a comic series that has been stuck in the dreaded Development Hell for years. Writer Brian K. Vaughan was hired to write a film script based on his own creation for Marvel Studios way back in 2008, before Marvel Studios became, well, Marvel Studios.

We’re not big comic guys, at least this writer isn’t, but one of the few series that has kept us engaged in the last few years is Marvel’s “Runaways.” The series, originally created by Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Alphona, follows five L.A. teenagers who discover that their parents are actually a group of supervillains, The Pride, who control the Californian criminal underworld. Discovering their own special abilities, they go on the run and work to bring down their parents.

Last we heard, Marvel’s “Runaways” was set to being shooting next March, but buzz on the project has curiously been zero. No casting rumors at all and essentially no chatter around what should be a film with heavy geek interest.

At any rate, the buzz should start to build again as it looks like casting is indeed underway as Keke Palmer (“True Jackson, VP”) tells Essence magazine that she’s been asked to join the film saying, “[‘True Jackson, VP’] had me tied up so much that I haven’t been able to do much of anything else.

Marvel’s ‘Runaways’ To Shoot March 2011; Retitled ‘Small Faces’?

A small update on Marvel’s big-screen adaptation of Brian K. Vaughn’s “The Runaways,” which has been called ” ‘The Breakfast Club’ with super heroes.”

It’s about a group of teenagers who discover that their parents are part of an evil crime group called the Pride.

And that adolescent bent is why Marvel Studios ultimately went with director Peter Sollet who has little to no CGI, action super hero experience, but directed the teenage-oriented pictures, “Raising Victor Vargas,” and “Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist” (we’re hoping for more of the former and less of the latter).

Marvel’s ‘Runaways’ To Be Penned By ‘No Heroics’ Creator

Say what you like about Marvel Studios’ output so far (and really, only “Iron Man” has been an out-and-out victory, creatively and commercially), but they’re not shy about making brave choices. While we still live in fear of Joe Johnston’s appointment to directorial duties on “Captain America: The First Avenger,” their other directorial picks, of Jon Favreau, Kenneth Branagh and Joss Whedon, have been ballsy, and the movies have been impeccably cast.

This looks to continue with what might be their first movie outside of the build up to “The Avengers” — an adaptation of Brian K Vaughan’s “Runaways.” Joss Whedon, who also wrote for the series — following the teen children of supervillains in L.A.

Joss Whedon Was In The Running to Direct Marvel’s ‘Runaways’ Movie; But Peter Sollett Has The Gig

Update: Well, Joss Whedon was in the running, as less than an hour after we posted our initial story, Deadline is reporting that Peter Sollet (“Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist,” “Raising Victor Vargas”) is in negotiations to direct Marvel’s “Runaways.”

Despite Sollet’s lack of experience handling CGI effects and action, it appears this choice seems to indicate that Disney is aiming for a potential franchise that has a firm handle on “The Breakfast Club”-esque vibe of this franchise that will have its sights aimed squarely on the “Twilight”-aged crowd.

Box Office: ‘Alice in Wonderland’ Comes In First (Again) With $34.5 Million

Spring weather beckons, but where are all the kids? Not playing outside, apparently. Between “Alice in Wonderland” spending a third week at the top and the impressive opening of “Diary of a Wimpy Kid,” it looks like all minors have been ignoring higher temperatures in favor of the frigid environment of darkened theaters. With $34.5 million this weekend, “Alice” has now brought in $266 million, which should put it among the top earners when 2010 comes to a close (particularly when you account for another $300 million from international audience’s pockets).

In Theaters: ‘The Bounty Hunter,’ ‘Repo Men,’ ‘Greenberg’

Expect “Alice In Wonderland” to continue dominating the box-office this weekend, even with several new films out in wide release. The Burton/Depp 3D extravaganza is doing very well with repeat business, with the public much more infatuated with the film than critics. “The Bounty Hunter” should post decent numbers for second place, filling the rom-com void and boosted by the romantic rumors linking the two stars of the film. “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” and “Repo Men” should fill the next slots, but shouldn’t see much shelf life.

Review: ‘The Runaways’ Features Great Performances Stuck In A Standard Biopic

On paper, the idea of pairing of visionary music video director Floria Sigismondi with the story of all girl rockers The Runaways seems like a match made in heaven. Sigismondi, who rose to fame directing “Beautiful People” for Marilyn Manson, went on to work with a dream list of artists creating alluring works for the likes of Sigur Ros, Bjork, The White Stripes, David Bowie and more. But with her script that hitting all the familiar notes of every rock biopic you’ve seen before, crippled by a low-budget and seemingly out of her depth, Sigismondi never gets the chance to put her signature on her feature film debut.

More Of ‘The Runaways’ Soundtrack Leaks, Hear ‘California Paradise,’ ‘Queens Of Noise’ & ‘Dead End Justice’

Either the people behind “The Runaways” want to make sure audiences are prepped before seeing Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning sing in the film, or there hasn’t been a very good lid kept on the soundtrack due out on March 23rd.

More of the soundtrack has hit the web in the past few days, offering more samples of Stewart and Fanning rocking out. We saw the film this morning (review is forthcoming) and despite the snarkiness from certain corners of the web, they actually nail their performances (and to be fair, it’s not like Joan Jett and Cherie Currie were the greatest singers to begin with).

So we’ve already revealed the soundtrack details for “The Runaways” film and you’ve already heard the Dakota Fanning and Kristen Stewart-sung version of “Cherry Bomb” (the girls play Cherie Currie and Joan Jett from the seminal ’70s L.A. girl-rock band).

So now here’s the actual music video, which is directed by Floria Sigismondi, in that it is ripped straight out of the film (where the song pretty much plays out in full, music-video style).

So we’ve already revealed the soundtrack details to “The Runaways” and the fact that Dakota Fanning herself (who plays lead singer Cherie Currie), sings four tracks on the CD (and presumably in the movie as well), including, “Cherry Bomb,” “California Paradise” plus “Queens of Noise” and “Dead End Justice.” Kristen Stewart joins her on the tracks, as she obviously plays Joan Jett in the picture.

And now Vulture have dug up a “Cherry Bomb” leak on YouTube.

Dark Horizons has a rundown (from box-office mojo) of the latest release date switcheroos and there are some interesting changes to note.

The critically shrugged “The Runaways,” originally slated to open on March 19th has now been pushed three weeks to April 9. Update: Hold the phone. Anne Thompson explains via Apparition’s Bob Bearney. It will open in semi-limited release (220 screens in ten cities) on March 19, followed by another 1000 screens on April 9.

‘The Runaways’ Soundtrack Features David Bowie, MC5, Sex Pistols & (Of Course) The Runaways

The soundtrack to the forthcoming “The Runaways” biopic has been revealed and it’s pretty much what you might expect, though that’s not a bad thing at all.

The ’70s based rock saga about Joan Jett’s all-girl teen rock band earned mixed reviews when it premiered at Sundance, though it seemed everyone agreed that Michael Shannon steals the show as the sleazebag manager/promoter Kim Fowley.

But whatever the merits of the film, the soundtrack seems like a solid evocation of the period featuring tracks by David Bowie, MC5, The Stooges, Sex Pistols and (duh) The Runaways.

After mixed critical reception for its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, little has since been heard from Floria Sigismondi’s “The Runaways,” which stars Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning respectively as Joan Jett and Cherie Currie.

So, we couldn’t make it to Sundance this year, but that’s not going to stop us from keeping you on top of events there. As ever, the festival’s fairly front-loaded, so it’s been a busy few days over in Park City, with many of the bigger, starrier premieres already haven taken place. Buzz is starting to filter in on some of these, as well as the hidden, unexpected gems, so, without further ado…

The festival kicked off on Thursday night with the premiere of “Howl,” the feature debut of documentarians Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman (“The Celluloid Closet”).

Update: A clip from the film has turned up online and we’ve embedded it below. In the scene, we see the first meeting between Joan Jett (Kristen Stewart) and Cherrie Currie (Dakota Fanning) as arranged by manager Kim Fowley (Michael Shannon). As expected, Shannon steals the show with his skeezy take on Fowler, while Fanning looks out of her depths, but we’ll wait to hear what the general consensus is after this screens at Sundance.
