Malkovich, Malkovich, Malkovich. Ever since the global COVID-19 pandemic hit the U.S. and then basically forced most of the country to shut down and self-isolate in March 2020, the idea of existential despair has been on our brains both consciously and unconsciously. First, of course, it was panic—see stores running out of food and toilet paper—and some were able to channel that anxious energy into a kind of manic hypercreativity or hysterical productivity in the first few months of uncertainty (Steven Soderbergh famously wrote three full screenplays in about the first two months of the pandemic, challenging the nervous energy of not knowing what to do with himself with so much “downtime”).

In our ongoing Inflection Point series, we look back at the films that have taken on new relevance due to our ongoing cultural and political upheaval. Some beloved, some undiscovered, these titles deserve newfound consideration as film criticism evolves to meet the moment.

For four years, director John Hillcoat kept a journal detailing the lengthy production on “The Road.” From his first moments of pre-production to his final premiere, Hillcoat wrote at length about the challenges of adapting an award-winning book for the big screen.

On Friday night at the 2010 San Francisco International Film Festival, Robert Duvall was presented the Pete J. Owens Award for acting, before the West Coast Premiere of Duvall’s most recent role in “Get Low.”

While much of the evening was spent on a retrospective of Duvall’s impressive career, he also took time to look ahead. Duvall reiterated his excitement about the crawling-towards-a-greenlight production of Terry Gilliam’s “The Man Who Killed Don Quixote,” yet at the same time, the actor sounded a mix of doubt and optimism.

As we noted last week, the upcoming slate of films from The Weinstein Company was notably missing two projects that have been on the radar for sometime: “Shanghai,” the period piece set in 1940s China, from “1408” director Mikael Hafstrom starring John Cusack, and “Hoodwinked Too!” the sequel to the animated hit “Hoodwinked, the True Story of Little Red Riding Hood,” which came out in 2005. The Weinsteins have lately been playing hide-and-seek with release dates, to the detriment of some projects that end up sitting around for much longer than they need to, and the producers of “Hoodwinked” at Kanbar Entertainment have taken umbrage with their project being tossed around– filing suit against TWC for breach of contact in pushing back the planned January 15th release date, as reported by Variety.

Teetering on what seemed like financial ruin for most of last year, things seem to be looking up for The Weinstein Company in 2010. They walked away from last month’s Sundance Film Festival with two films under their arms: the war doc “The Tillman Story” and the highly anticipated romantic drama “Blue Valentine” with Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams.

Now, Deadline Hollywood is reporting that the The Weinstein Company has closed a deal with Sony who will handle the marketing and distribution of their titles to DVD.

If it wasn’t clear to anyone else, the holidays are prime time at the box office for family bonding/torture. As a result, three of the top five this weekend were family offerings, with Disney ruling the roost thanks to “The Princess And The Frog.” The latest in their line of princess films probably suffered from ruining the novelty of a black princess, by turning her into a frog for the majority of the film (progress!).

The holiday movie season is about to become very busy, so the first weekend of December was looking like a weak sister for awhile now. Still, the beat goes on for “The Blind Side,” which continued its improbable run by landing at #1 in its third week. The hooray-for-institutionalized-racism drama has been surging since a pretty good opening, but it probably owes its success to a wide-open marketplace and the diminishing returns of huge opener “The Twilight Saga: New Moon.” “Blind Side” might stop short of $200 million if the legs drop out in coming weeks, but who knows?

Last weekend, “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” grossed a little over $111 million more than “The Blind Side” over the three day weekend. During this holiday session, however, that gap was narrowed down to $2 million. Chalk this one up to the fickle nature of the “Twilight” fanbase, as well as the burgeoning return of the word-of-mouth hit that is “The Blind Side.” “New Moon” dropped 70% (which we sorta predicted) to just barely take the lead over the three day weekend, nabbing $66 million for the five day.

Thanksgiving. Best holiday ever. If we’re going to watch a movie, it will probably be from the comfort of home — in the spirit of the occasion. But Hollywood is banking on families venturing out to the cinema over the long weekend, and they are usually right on the money. What are they going to see? It is quite a mixed bag this year and with “New Moon” sure to pull in a least the second-timers and “The Blind Side” pulling the NFL heartstrings, the #1 spot is anyone’s guess.

Lately much has been made about Cormac McCarthy’s 1985 Western novel “Blood Meridian,” which centers on a nameless teenage runaway in the American Southwest who falls in with a group of bounty-hunting scalp hunters who massacred Indians in the mid 19th century. In several corners it’s been called a type of nightmarish Western horror.

And today “The Road” director John Hillcoat said in his AV Club interview that he made “The Proposition” when he couldn’t actually get the rights to the novel.

Playlist contrib Kevin Jagernauth said to me, John Hillcoat’s latest, “doesn’t quite get a handle on the tone, but holy shit Viggo Mortensen and the kid [Kodi Smit-McPhee] are fantastic.”

We’d agree. And even though we’d give the film a much higher grade than he’d allow (we gave it an [A-] cause it was so emotionally affecting, Jagernauth said a [B] because of some of the flaws and because it “wasn’t the gut punch I was hoping for”), we’d concur that the film has tonality issues.

Tommy Lee Jones was supposed to return to the director’s chair for an adaptation of Michael Connelly’s legal thriller “The Lincoln Lawyer,” about an ambulance-chasing, bottom-of-the-ladder criminal attorney who is chosen to represent a Beverley Hills playboy in a murder case. Matthew McConaughey is supposed to star and that’s still happening, but Tommy Lee Jones has apparently walked off the project due to “creative differences.” Lakeshore Entertainment, who are producing, are seeking a new director and are still trying to shoot by next spring.

Perhaps we were being overzealous. We got email confirmation that “The Road” was being pulled in certain markets.

In fact, the email reads:

Dear Members of the Press,
The Weinstein Company has decided to do a roll out release pattern of THE ROAD and it will no longer be opening on 11/25/09 in your market.

This lead us to believe, coupled with other reports, people writing us and telling us the John Hillcoat film had suddenly disappeared from their area, that “The Road” was reverting back to a limited release, one that we presumed would be a NY/LA one.

Poor John Hillcoat’s “The Road.” It’s feeling the the unwanted stepchild of the the Weinstein Company if it wasn’t already.

It’s been bounced around more release dates than we care to remember and it finally landed a few months ago as a wide release on November 25 (the Wednesday before Thanksgiving) after being knocked off its October 16 limited release date.

Not anymore. That plans changed again and according to a email we received about local theater chain markets, the film has reverted back to a limited release roll-out plan (or at least it seems like that’s the case).

Update: We know have the album cover and the tracklist. There are 17 tracks on the album, which is great; a lot more cues than we expected.

Since Nick Cave & Warren Ellis’ White Lunar soundtrack compilation album came out earlier this year with about a half a dozen tracks from the duo’s lugubrious and heartbroken score to John Hillcoat’s post-apocalyptic drama, “The Road,” we just sort of assume that would be it and there would be no full soundtrack.

Aw, poor Brett Ratner. Will he ever cease to be the butt of jokes in the online movie world? Survey says: not a chance.

Someone is having fun with the fauxter director and started a Ratner Films Tumblr blog that basically photoshops Ratner’s heads onto different movie posters. Our favorites, “The Road,” “Avatar,” “Prince of Persia” and “The Wolfman” can be seen here.

Sort of. At the very least, this new trailer disposes of the misleading, fake and stupid disaster footage of this first look at the film and is leagues ahead of the latest one sheet that hit the web last week.

Just kidding, but seriously, what the hell is going on with this poster?

Based on the bleak, Pulitzer prize winning novel by Cormac McCarthy, the story concerns a father and son trying to survive in a not-too-distant future version of America that has been ravaged by an unknown apocalypse that has left it sun-blocked, ashen, and has turned humanity into violent, depraved cannibals.

The film has already been subjected to release date bumps, bad buzz about it’s grim subject matter, misleading trailers and now misleading artwork.

Having kicked off the festival with a pair of comedies, today brought a much more serious tone, with John Hillcoat’s adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel “The Road,” and fashion designer Tom Ford’s directorial debut, “A Single Man.”

The Playlist’s editor-in-chief pretty much flipped for “A Single Man” at Toronto, and we agree with pretty much every word he wrote — it’s easily one of the best movies of the year.

Are they releasing a soundtrack to John Hillcoat’s “The Road,” starring Viggo Mortensen and Kodi Smit-McPhee?

Hard to say, but pretty much all the tracks from White Lunar, the new, two-disc compilation album of Nick Cave and Warren Ellis’ soundtrack work that feature music from “The Road,” have leaked (we gave you a first listen a few weeks ago).

Though it seems doubtful if a separate disc is coming out as even something like the soundtrack to “Up In The Air” (which hits in December) is already listed (without details) on Amazon and meanwhile there is no mention of a ‘Road’ score, so this might be all we’re going to get (and there might not be that much more as it is, “The Road,” uses a lot of the same themes repetitively, though not quite to the mantra-like effect of Ellis and Cave’s “Assassination of Jesse James” score).

The rather gorgeous Eva Green and Ewan McGregor are set to star in David Mackenzie’s “Last Word,” which is an apocalyptic-sounding story about two people who fall in love as the world begins to fall apart. Mackenzie and McGregor last worked together on the 2003 drama “Young Adam.” “Last Word,” is just the working title for now. As much as some people hate it, Green’s debut in “The Dreamers” is excellent and it’s one of our favorite films of this decade.

The Venice Film Festival awards are in, but don’t expect for too many names you’ll recognize. Shut out of all awards were films like Michael Moore’s “Capitalism: A Love Story,” and John Hillcoat’s “The Road,” which would have helped combat some of the negative buzz.

The major American “mainstream” (very relative) film to win an award was Todd Solondz’s “Life During Wartime” which won the Best Screenplay award. We just showed you some footage from it yesterday.

Man, where do we start here?

Let’s quell your fears if you had any. The trailer for John Hillcoat’s “The Road”, released a few months ago, worried many, including us, not only because it contained pixelated and clipped devastation newsreel footage — nowhere to be found in the original and beloved Cormac McCarthy book — but it seemed to try and sell an entirely different film: a post-apocalyptic action/thriller the same way Miramax tried to sell their arty and meditative post-apocalyptic film, “Blindness.” And in a way it’s understandable, as studios always have to try and net the most flies.
