Ray Winstone is reportedly in line to lead John Hillcoat’s adaptation of regular collaborator Nick Cave’s novel “The Life And Death Of Bunny Munro.”

“Winstone is dying to do it,” Cave told the Dundee Literary Festival. “He really loved the script when we first handed it to him. He was really excited about it, and really distressed when it kinda tanked and never got made.”

The novel was apparently first conceived as a script — where Winstone’s interest first came about — but, due to its failure to be produced, Cave eventually wrote it as a novel which, in turn, is now set to be made as a British television mini-series.

Here are our 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 picks.

The mid-aughts were incredibly strong for movies — we dealt with 2005 yesterday, and had to expand the list it was such a good year, while 2007 (coming tomorrow) had several of the very best movies of the whole decade. In between the two, 2006 is less immediately stacked with goodness, but over time has been revealed as a truly great year for genre filmmaking.

While no soundtrack for John Hillcoat’s “The Road” starring Viggo Mortensen and Kodi Smit-McPhee has been released yet, White Lunar, the new, two-disc compilation album of Nick Cave and Warren Ellis’ soundtrack work did come out this week (September 22) on import.

And yes, there is incredibly haunting and funereal music from “The Proposition” (which Cave also wrote the screenplay for) and the phenomenal “The Assassination of Jesse James By The Coward John Ford,” but there is also new music to “The Road,” that doesn’t hit theaters now until November 25 (we saw it during TIFF and thought it was bleak, but beautiful and heartwrenching at times).

Nick Cave is a busy, busy man. He just wrapped up a lengthy tour in support of last year’s Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! record with a storming show at the Latitude Festival in the UK, he’s publishing his second novel, “The Death of Bunny Munro,” in September, and continuing to support “Do You Love Me Like I Love You,” a series of 14 short films about the Bad Seeds’ back catalog, the latest of which premiered in London last month.

New York magazine talked to “The Road” director John Hillcoat briefly about his adaptation of the harrowing novel by Cormac McCarthy starring man of the fall season, Viggo Mortensen. The world of that book is a treacherous, post-apocalyptic one, befallen from an unnamed disaster, but Hillcoat (who directed the similarly bleak 2005 film, “The Proposition”) bristles as the word “post-apocalyptic” as it connotes all kinds of one-dimensional cheesiness and he wanted to make a substantive film… more than just thrill ride for rotund, human popcorn vacuums in seats.
