The Producers Guild of America revealed the winners of the 2017 PGA Awards Saturday night in a ceremony that was predictable in the film categories, but full of surprises in the television ones.

As expected, “La La Land” took Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures, the organization’s equivalent to the Best Picture Oscar. Considering this award has only differentiated with the Oscars two (and a half) times over the previous 10 years (“Gravity” tied with “12 Years A  Slave” in 2013), it’s a major indicator of industry love and a pretty solid indicator what film will take the Best Picture prize.

While you might pejoratively call it “The Oscars for TV,” the truth is that these days, television has some of the best storytelling going, and Emmys are taking on a prestige not unlike those of the Academy Awards.

However, the landscape has changed with Netflix and Amazon becoming serious challengers to veteran networks like HBO and AMC, which has made the awards all the more exciting to watch.

If you’re an Oscar watcher and starting to come out in hives at the lack of awards speculation between now and the festival season kicking off at the end of August, you’re in luck, because this week sees the announcement of the 2016 Emmy Award nominations. With TV increasingly threatening to take the pop culture limelight from the movies (if it hasn’t already), the small-screen landscape has changed a fair amount over the years, but the Emmys still don’t quite seem to have the same glitz level as the Oscars.

The Emmys, TV’s biggest awards, don’t have the same kind of awards industrial complex around them, and that’s entirely for the best — without the legions of predictors and precursors in the same way that the Oscars have, there’s more room for surprises and shocks. But there are a few, and one of the biggest is the TCA Awards, or Television Critics’ Association.

They’ve been going for 32 years, but have likely rarely had a year with as much to pick from as they do here, and their 2016 nominations, announced today via Variety, has spread the wealth around appropriately.
