As a young man, the Denver-born McKay cut his teeth at venerated Chicago comedy institutions, like Second City, IO, and Upright Citizens Brigade. McKay then went on to audition for “Saturday Night Live,” where he failed to make the cut as a cast member.

And if you’re not sold on cast and premise alone, you should be a little tantalized by the presence behind the typewriter and camera of Shane Black, returning to the genre he’s most associated with — the buddy cop movie — for the first time in over a decade.

So it’s September, where the divide between the elites and the laymen couldn’t be any more apparent. The Toronto Film Festival has kickstarted Oscar season, and most people with an interest in the medium are ready to discuss something more substantial. But no matter the season, the multiplex remains the multiplex, so those cheap thrill seekers embraced the fourth film in the middling “Resident Evil” franchise. With the bells-and-whistles addition of 3D, the franchise easily eclipsed the bow of each previous film, and without anyone looking, “Resident Evil” has become one of the most financially reliable franchises out there, with each film generating a solid-to-spectacular profit on a respectable budget.

Historically, Labor Day Weekend closes the more-or-less explosive summer movie season not with a bang, but a whimper, and this weekend doesn’t look like it’s going to buck that overall trend. Perhaps because filmgoers are fatigued by successive summer blockbusters clamoring for their attention (though this year, maybe not so much), or because studios have become wary of the date, it has become an uncomfortable no man’s land between the big-budget actioner period and the awards-hopeful drama season.

UPDATE: Such is the nature of estimates. Final numbers were revealed on Monday, and while it originally looked like “The Last Exorcism” defeated “Takers” by about $300,000, both were a victim of overzealous bean counters. The weekend goes to “Takers” with a $20.5 million take, over “Exorcism”‘s $20.4 take. Keep supporting your local art house, people.

Kudos to Lionsgate for absolutely owning August. Their $20 million purchase of the domestic rights to “The Expendables” was a can’t-miss expenditure, and the film’s poised to crest $100 million.

Studios have long been trying to turn niche properties into movies with broad mainstream appeal, which is never as easy as just adding a teenybopper star or providing a jumpy soundtrack. Most of the time, they overspend and over-market a film and that leads everyone to assume it will appeal to one and all. Advertising oversaturation adds to this misconception, creating an opening weekend demand that will be yesterday’s news by the time a month rolls around.

Between all the yucks in “The Other Guys,” the case that Alan Gamble (Will Ferrell) and Terry Hoitz (Mark Wahlberg) had to solve involved the shady money maneuverings of one business mogul David Ershon (Steve Coogan), particularly as they relate to mega-CEO Pamela Boardman (a sadly underutilized Anne Heche). A running joke throughout the film had Hoitz constantly not understanding the ins-and-outs of the case and having no idea who The Federal Reserve is or what they do.

The Will Ferrell-Adam McKay teaming still works gangbusters. Each film they’ve teamed up for has done at least $85 million, with $30-something-million openings a virtual guarantee at this point. McKay doesn’t seem to be a selling point, so there must be some sort of pedigree the audience recognizes in the “real” Ferrell movies he does with McKay as opposed to the other, lesser films he does in between. The opening weekend of his last starring role, last year’s “Land of the Lost,” was only half of what “The Other Guys” is expected to do after final estimates.

Ultimately, the question is moot: Ferrell just is. From his cameo in “Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery,” to this week’s “The Other Guys,” Ferrell doesn’t merely act; like Tom Hardy in “Inception,” he embodies his characters, taking the legacy of Konstantin Stanislavski, Lee Strasberg and Marlon Brando and bringing it to its ultimate conclusion.

The summer symphony has swelled to early August and with that another broad comedy to heal the sunburn with a little laughter. Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg make for a perfect pair in “The Other Guys,” an outrageous buddy cop movie that is certain to smother the box office receipts of the similar “Cop Out” from earlier this year. It also means that “Inception” should finally lose its top spot, perhaps even settling for bronze.

We’re only a day away from the release of “The Other Guys,” and considering the generally excellent reviews, including our own, those of us who haven’t seen it are pretty excited for what most people are calling Adam McKay’s best film since “Anchorman” (which considering The Playlist’s undying love for “Step Brothers,” promises a great deal). But where next for the director? He signed on recently to direct the comic book adaptation “The Boys,” but a pair of interviews today have unearthed details on another project that appears to be in the running as well.

This writer hasn’t seen Adam Mckay and Will Ferrell’s buddy cop comedy, “The Other Guys” yet and will have to wait to see it this Friday with the pleebs, but between this Funny or Die clip — where Ferrell plays his ineffectual, but outbursty Allen Gamble character — and the R-rated clip from this morning, we’re pretty much stoked and greatly anticipating the film. Our only concern: The film is actually rated PG-13, not R.

From its balls-out opening (narrated by Ice-T, of course), “The Other Guys” plays with testosterone-injected, action-movie tropes, speeding up the editing while slowing down the fight sequences. But as easily as director Adam McKay makes the transition to action, he never entirely leaves his comic roots behind. Filled with comedic heavyweights, “The Other Guys” is an even match for “The Expendables,” going pound for pound with Sly Stallone’s film in terms of star power. McKay sees you your Stallone, Willis, Li, Statham, et al., and he’ll raise you Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Samuel L.

A few days ago, awful British tabloid The Sun did perhaps the best thing they’ve ever done for the world, and posted an extended clip reel for the film online, and it’s pretty great.

Adam McKay’s next directorial effort, “The Other Guys,” starring Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg is right around the corner and hits theaters August 6, so he’s already eyeing his next gig.

We already know that it’s probably going to be a live-action adaptation of the comic book “The Boys” for Sony (though McKay notes that he hasn’t “officially signed on yet”). Penned by “Preacher” scribe Garth Ennis, the comic book is a superhero satire focusing on a secret CIA group whose mission is to keep tabs on, and sometimes violently punish, out-of-control superheroes.

Mark Wahlberg is set to produce and star in “The Raven” for Universal Pictures. The idea is based on a six minute short on YouTube from Ricardo de Montreuil, who is also linked to the director’s chair for the big screen adaptation. De Montreuil, who previously directed “La Mujer De Mi Hermano,” used $5000 and a couple of weekends to shoot the short, which combines aspects of “X-Men,” “They Live” and “District 9” to tell the story of a powerful telekinetic sought by a mysterious Orwellian government against a futuristic Los Angeles backdrop.

You know what? Sometimes The Playlist team loves big, dumb, stupid fun and we really hope that the forthcoming “The Other Guys” with Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg fits the bill. We were amused by the first trailer that was unveiled back in April, and now we get another look at the film thanks to the international trailer.

While it boasts mostly the same footage and scenes from its domestic counterpart, it features a pretty hilarious closing clip with Eva Mendes, which seems to indicate her scenes with Ferrell and Wahlberg might be some of the funniest in the film.

Let’s face it: we get our seasons mixed up. Here we thought summer begins in mid-June, but according to Hollywood, it begins at the start of May. Which makes no real sense since their primary target, children, teens and college students, are doing major end-of-year work around the time. Plus, there’s the fact that you can really release a hit at any point during the year (“Alice In Wonderland”) so the dates are a little irrelevant, right?

Did you know The Artist Formerly Known As The Rock had a cameo in “Why Did I Get Married Too”? Is he a close personal friend of Tyler Perry? Is there a secret link between WWE wrestlers and “Meet The Browns”? Whatever the case, that might be the last we see of the namby-pamby comedy star Dwayne Johnson that’s been polluting movie screens in the likes of “The Game Plan” and the surprisingly successful “The Tooth Fairy.” This summer he plays a badass cop in “The Other Guys” and will be taking the lead on the revenge thriller “Faster,” so it looks like Johnson’s finally followed his true calling – punching lots of people, with occasional flexing.

“In the toughest city in the world… nobody fights crime like these guys,” goes the opening tagline to Adam McKay’s new directorial effort, “The Other Guys.” McKay of course being one half of the genius team with Will Ferrell that has brought us idiotic delights such as “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy,” “Step Brothers,” “Talladega Nights,” plus amazing Funny or Die clips like “The Landlord” and the especially good, “Green Team.”

This time the story he and Ferrell have concocted teams the goofy lead actor with straight man
Mark Wahlberg, and the film also stars Samuel L.

Running at about 30 seconds and filmed on what looks like a cell phone camera, this clip of the forthcoming buddy cop comedy “The Other Guys” starring Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg is about as “teaser” as it gets.

Captured by Collider at a Sony video stand at ShoWest, it’s basically Wahlberg and Ferrell doing an action pose and then showing them bickering after the scene is cut. It’s sort of mildly amusing.
