In this week’s episode of The Discourse, host Mike DeAngelo has a crisis of faith while discussing Focus Features‘ “Conclave.” The film follows a Cardinal tasked with leading one of the world’s most secretive and ancient events, selecting a new Pope when he finds himself at the center of a conspiracy that could shake the very foundation of the Catholic Church. The Edward Berger (“All Quiet on the Western Front”) film stars Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, Isabella Rossellini, Carlos Diehz, and more.

Family is blood and biology on the surface, but found families—those who are there for us no matter what kinship exists— have taken a central position in our culture in recent years. Those notions, identity, who we are, and the limits of family and fatherhood all come into play in the compelling second season of FX’s “The Old Man” starring Jeff Bridges. Growing beyond just a thrilling spy thriller about an aging ex-CIA agent on the run, Dan Chase(Bridges), and the former ally set to chase him down FBI Assistant Director Harold Harper (John Lithgow), “The Old Man” deeply evolves in season two, arguably different enough that it could turn off viewers more inclined to the thriller action elements of its inaugural season.

From the new major superhero series to the two under-the-radar series premiering their fourth seasons, plenty of television for every type of viewer is hitting screens this September. The big names are the spinoff series “The Penguin” and “Agatha All Along,” both of which focus on breakout characters from their respective predecessors.

Elsewhere, there’s the recently nominated fourth season of critical favorite “Slow Horses” and the final season of the HBO series, “My Brilliant Friend.” For comedy there’s the latest bite-sized series for FX with “English Teacher.” If none of that strikes your fancy and you’re looking for something more peculiar, check out the upcoming adult-animated series from Zack Snyder.

It’s that mad time of year again, the fall season rush. In film terms, it’s manic in terms of releases and film festivals. And while slightly less hectic in the world of TV, there are a host of new and returning shows coming this fall, plus the Emmys in September. But the era of what we used to routinely call #TooMuchContent has reduced in the drastically changing streaming wars. The Netflix stock market crash in 2002 had a ripple effect as Wall Street reevaluated streaming value; the 2023 strikes didn’t help, but the end result has been slightly less content, which has made it more manageable for writers like us and audiences, frankly, many of which didn’t have time to watch everything.

Developed by Jonathan E. Steinberg and Robert Levine with key episodes directed by Jon Watts (Sony‘s “Spider-Man” trilogy), also an executive producer, “The Old Man” debuted in the summer of 2022.

Every year in the spring, Film at Lincoln Center honors a luminary of the film industry with the prestigious Chaplin Award. This year’s honoree is Academy Award-winning actor, beloved screen icon, and the dude himself, Jeff Bridges, the actor known for unforgettable classics like “The Last Picture Show,” “Fearless,” “The Big Lebowski,” “True Grit,” “Heaven’s Gate,” “Thunderbolt and Lightfoot,” “Starman, “Crazy Heart” and more.

The Oscars are now just a week away and Sunday provided three guild award ceremonies to provide hints at who may take away Hollywood’s most prestigious prizes. The Daniels’ “Everything Everywhere All At Once” continued its winning streak at the ACE Eddie Awards for editing and the WGA Award for screenplay, but they didn’t complete the trifecta at the ASC Awards. That’s because they never made the cut with the American Society of Cinematographers in the first place (and Larkin Seiple didn’t earn an Oscar nomination either).

The streaming age might be in flux as we speak. The biggest story of the year, without question—which maybe some people don’t recognize as the biggest story of the year, but trust us, it was— was the Netflix stock crash of April 2022. After years of flying high, Wall Street suddenly turned on Netflix, turned on streaming, and started rethinking their evaluations of the profit margins on streaming. This news rocked the film and TV industry.

After a lymphoma scare in 2020 and an even worse COVID-19 scare in 2021, Jeff Bridges is back in action in FX On Hulu‘s “The Old Man.” And while the long-time actor’s career is well into its golden years, with his last film roles coming in 2018, it’s great that Bridge is still alive, thriving, and being The Dude. After all, he’s had some amazing roles over the years, including “The Big Lebowski,” “Fat City,” “The Fisher King,” and more.

The most crowded season in television history just came to a close for Emmy voters, leaving professionals scrambling to figure out how to dig out from the weight of so many new and returning shows. Programs that had been delayed because of COVID like “Atlanta” and “Barry” came roaring back, and all of the major networks and streamers seemed to invest in the Limited Series game. The result was a sense that television had become almost overwhelming, making it harder than ever to hear the best voices through all the noise.

Being haunted by the ghosts of our past can sound a little cliché at times, but when there’s not much of your personal future left, all one can do is reflect. And when you crossed a lot of moral lines, betrayed former allies beyond the pale of forgiveness, deceived your masters, and worked for the murderous American CIA regime in Afghanistan during the war-torn 1980s, the specters of your various sins are going to eventually catch up with you.

If it feels like the sheer volume of noteworthy television has been overwhelming so far this year, that trend continues going into the summer months. Both new and returning shows are given an equal spotlight, with fan anticipation for series such as “The Umbrella Academy,” “The Boys,” and “Westworld” at all-time highs considering the long wait in between seasons. Beyond the bigger titles, which include another Marvel series, it’s a truly scattered month in terms of tone and genre, from Olivier Assayas taking another approach to his “Irma Vep” story, Ben Whishaw dabbling in comedy, to a Queer/YA vampire love story.

It’s a grim scene at the beginning of the trailer for “The Old Man,” a CIA revenge thriller starring Jeff Bridges. Bridges, a CIA hitman who thought he was out of the game calls his daughter (Ali Shawkat) says goodbye, says he loves her, and says they’ll never see each other again.

That’s the premise of this long-gestating FX thriller that was delayed by COVID and then once again delayed by Bridges’ 2020/2021 cancer scare.

It’s already been a good year for TV fans, with critics raving about “Mare of Easttown,” “The Underground Railroad,” and “The White Lotus” (among others on lists like this one). After an incredibly weird autumn last year thanks to pandemic delays, streaming services and networks are hoping that this season is more traditional, and they are all bringing out their big guns, including new dramas, returning shows, and long-awaited mini-series.

In a world already oversaturated with streaming services, the folks at FX have decided to do the right thing and ditch their own platform and join up with a bigger service thanks to the Disney purchase of Fox in 2019 and the eventual takeover of Hulu. So, instead of us talking about FX launching something called FX Max and charging $15 per month, we are happy to say that the network has instead decided to put all its eggs in the Hulu basket.

When you read the name Jon Watts in a headline lately, it normally is something to do with the filmmaker’s unenviable position as the filmmaker in the middle of the Disney/Sony Spider-Man rights situation. But hey, this time, Watts is in the news and it’s not superhero-related at all. In fact, this new project might be the most interesting thing he’s signed on for since “Cop Car.”

According to FX, Watts has signed on to helm the pilot episode of the upcoming series “The Old Man,” starring Jeff Bridges.
