One of the films that seemed poised for an awards season run, but has seemingly been left behind, is David Lowery’s “The Old Man & the Gun.” Even with positive reviews, as well as, great performances from Robert Redford and Sissy Spacek, ‘Old Man’ just isn’t a major part of the Oscar conversation, and probably fell under the radar of film fans after it hit theaters.

Robert Redford has won just about every award and accolade that can be given to someone in the entertainment industry. He’s won Oscars, Golden Globes, and a BAFTA. He’s earned lifetime achievement awards from the Academy and the Screen Actors Guild. But it appears that Redford has another accolade he’d like to add to his storied career — shortest retirement in history.

Back in August, the actor-filmmaker said that he was going to retire from acting after his latest film “The Old Man & The Gun.” He had plenty of reasons for it and seemed adamant that now was the right time to walk away from being in front of the camera.

The Telluride Film Festival announced it’s official line up for 2018 and, if you’ve been paying attention or doing your due diligence there were few surprises.

The big narrative premieres are Joel Edgerton’s “Boy Erased,” Jason Reitman’s “The Front Runner,” David Lowery’s “The Old Man & The Gun,” Karyn Kusama’s “Destroyer,” Marielle Heller’s “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” and Yann Demange’s “White Boy Rick.”  Ralph Fiennes also returns to the director’s chair with “The White Crow” while Ed Zwick’s “Trial By Fire” will make its only festival appearance in Colorado.

With Venice, Toronto, and Telluride becoming this fall’s go-to places to premiere a film, we had no idea that the BFI London Film Festival had an ace up its sleeve. Today, the LFF announced its lineup of films appearing in the Official Competition, and while there are some incredible films from throughout this year, the big surprise was a new entry from acclaimed filmmaker Ben Wheatley.

That’s right, Ben Wheatley, best known for his films “High-Rise” and 2016’s “Free Fire,” is back with a film that we didn’t even know was finished, titled “Happy New Year, Colin Burstead.” The film seems to be a bit of a departure for Wheatley, as its described as a family dramedy focused on the titular Colin and his dysfunctional family around New Years.

As if anticipation wasn’t high already with David Lowery’s upcoming film, “The Old Man & The Gun,” the added story of Robert Redford’s retirement makes the film even more interesting. And judging by the new trailer, there’s this meta feeling throughout the footage that just seems to signal that Redford’s choice to leave acting behind after this role might have been part of his performance.

The trailer, courtesy of Yahoo, gives viewers the basic premise of the “mostly true story.” The titular “old man,” played by Robert Redford, is a seasoned bank robber that used the “gun” to help pull off over a dozen heists.

After a slow start, 2017 turned out to be a pretty great year for movies, and 2018 looks to keep that up in a big way.
