The Telluride Film Festival announced it’s official line up for 2018 and, if you’ve been paying attention or doing your due diligence there were few surprises.

The big narrative premieres are Joel Edgerton’s “Boy Erased,” Jason Reitman’s “The Front Runner,” David Lowery’s “The Old Man & The Gun,” Karyn Kusama’s “Destroyer,” Marielle Heller’s “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” and Yann Demange’s “White Boy Rick.”  Ralph Fiennes also returns to the director’s chair with “The White Crow” while Ed Zwick’s “Trial By Fire” will make its only festival appearance in Colorado.

September is right around the corner which means a two-fold attack of movies. 1) the wealth of riches that arrives in the more-adult-themed awards season and 2) the overlapping films that appear first during the fall film festival circuit. So, our fall preview essentially doubles for both, a few films here and there missing due to lack of release dates yet. But yes, the Venice Film Festival starts this week, the Telluride Film Festival this weekend and following that a brief reprieve before the Toronto International Film Festival and then the genre-focused Fantastic Fest in Austin and artsy and prestigious New York Film Festival in late September and early October.

The filmmaker behind “Ain’t Them Bodies Saints” is arguably one of the best directors working today. And he’s on a total roll. The jump to the big leagues with Disney’s “Pete’s Dragon” was no sell-out move or film where the studio took control; Lowery’s adaptation of the cartoon was genuinely tender and heartfelt.

He’s been nominated for an Oscar three times, winning once (Best Director for “Ordinary People“) while also the recipient of the Honorary Oscar in 2002. The filmmaker created the Sundance Film Festival, has been recognized for his charitable and political work, and probably has enough other awards and honors to fill a house.

Quite often in Hollywood, projects get announced and then they wind up sitting around collecting dust, and we had feared that had happened with “The Old Man And The Gun.” First revealed back in 2013, the project teamed David Lowery, who has hot off “Ain’t Them Bodies Saints” at the time, with Robert Redford for an intriguing sounding crime flick. Well, the duo instead got together for this summer’s lovely “Pete’s Dragon,” and now they’re ready to blow the dust off that prior project and get it going.
