FX has announced via a press release circulated by outlets like Deadline has revealed that Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij are working together on a whodunnit limited series, “Retreat.”

READ MORE: Netflix Cancels ‘The OA’ After Two Seasons & Not Even The Movements Can Bring It Back

It sort of sounds like an amplified version of murder mysteries such as “Knives Out” or likely similar to something like “Clue,” with a Gen Z spin.

The advent of streaming, peak TV, prestige TV, and now, in late 2019, the new 2nd age of the Streaming Wars— thanks to the arrival of Disney+, Apple TV+, and soon, HBO Max—is going to make the content deluge even more difficult to navigate for audiences and TV critics, trying to discern what’s what and keeping up.

The streaming wars are upon us now, really taking off in November 2019 for anyone wanting to keep track— with the arrival of Disney+ and Apple TV+, and the debuts of HBO Max, Peacock, and others in the near future.

Sadly, those days are gone. And the latest victim to Netflix’s penchant for canceling shows that don’t reach a mass audience is none other than “The OA.”

Sure, “The OA” is a weird show.

One of the most narratively and technically unorthodox shows, the production behind “The OA” is almost as much of an enigma as the show itself. Defying traditional television production schedules, throwing out standard pattern budgets during production due to the fact that it is one of the few shows to exist without a pattern narrative, Marling and Batmanglij have met their ambitious grasp with the final product in the overall superior second season.

As OA (Marling) is rushed to the hospital after being shot during a visceral, topical school shooting scene, she proclaims to the kids that they succeeded. After the screen cuts to black, we see a bright hospital room, before cutting to black, again, as OAs disembodied voice mumbles, “Homer?”

“The OA” hasn’t lost any creative steam during the over two-year hiatus between seasons.

Either you absolutely love it or you think it’s terrible. There are very few people that would fall in between those extremes. And interestingly enough, your feelings on the show probably weren’t cemented until the very end, with a scene that won’t be spoiled here but sparked some incredible debate. That being said, regardless of your views of the series, “The OA” was a hit for Netflix and is about to make its returns, with ‘Part II.’

Netflix will continue to pump out multiple shows a week, Amazon is entering a new phase with the remit “bring us the next ‘Game Of Thrones,’” some old favorites are returning after a year — or several years — off, every major network has at least one potential titan debuting, and tech behemoth Apple is finally getting into the scripted game after years of planning and teasing.

If you say what the show is literally about, it seems almost mundane. On the most basic level, the series follows a young blind woman named Prairie that disappears. After being gone for seven years, Prairie suddenly reappears and can now see. But honestly, that’s just the most basic description of the show. There are tons of sci-fi elements, a big spiritual mystery, there’s a supporting cast of misfits, and yes, interpretive dance.

Back at the start of December, we ran down the 100 films that we’re most looking forward to across 2018, and we picked out some festival favorites that we’ve already seen and know are worth checking out too. But even with 250 hours worth or so of promising art and entertainment, that barely scratches the surface of what people will be talking about in terms of moving images, because, well, we don’t know if you heard, but TV’s gotten really good.

The streaming site has announced they’ve renewed “The OA” for a second season, with Zal Batmanglij and Brit Marling to return to their creative roles on the show.

A show about life, death and the afterlife that also involves dance (though that term itself is a bit reductive), Netflix‘s “The OA” is certainly one of the most ambitious sci-fi/fantasy shows (again, it fits those boxes but also expands beyond them) to arrive in quite some time. If the secretive nature of its production and launch started the buzz, the series finale has truly got people talking.

The new show from longtime collaborators Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij (“Sound Of My Voice,” “The East“) arrived seemingly out of nowhere on the streaming service, with only one trailer and a couple of clips landing in the days before its release last week.

The earliest and best example of how “The OA,” which is a bit like a lot of things but not a lot like any one thing, is going to set itself apart from the Peak TV herd, comes at 57 minutes in to the first episode. It’s only then, after what must surely count as the longest “cold open” in history, that the words “Netflix presents” come up on screen.

The streaming service has been keeping details and even the very existence of “The OA” under wraps all year, but just like that they are dropping it on the service on Friday, which might be perfect in case your local screening of “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” is sold out.
