TELLURIDE – Since it first debuted in 1897, Edmond Rostand’s original play “Cyrano de Bergerac” has been staged all over the world, adapted into numerous films, and seen its ingenious narrative used in almost every form of modern media. For a new version to triumph, it needs to equal or, hopefully, transcend what came before. Attempt to turn Rostand’s work into a musical, and it becomes an even tougher challenge.

pointed out recently, following their
acquisition of Paul Thomas Anderson’s upcoming 1970s San Fernando Valley
movie, MGM is making movies. Now run by Michael De Luca—a
former New Line Cinema executive who champion filmmakers like David Fincher,
F. Gary Gray, and Paul Thomas Anderson— the MGM chairman is
seemingly setting up a similar shop that includes blockbusters like the Bond
series, but also smart thrillers and art fair directed by award-winning
filmmakers.

Accompanying the surprise release of her new album Folklore (the visual art for which has some Robert Eggers-esque leanings), Taylor Swift released a new music video for her song “Cardigan” last night. Directed by the singer herself, the video features photography from none other than Rodrigo Prieto, a frequent collaborator with Martin Scorsese, Alejandro González Iñárritu, as well as Ang Lee.

It’s been about three years since filmmaker Mike Mills released his last feature, “20th Century Women.” In the last 9 years, the director has only released one other film, 2010’s “Beginners.” Needless to say, film fans are waiting to find out when Mills plans on making something new. Well, we can’t really report on a new feature coming from the director anytime soon, but he does have a short film and a music video he’s working on, in collaboration with rock band The National and star Alicia Vikander.
