Following a historic strike and work stoppage in 2023, there were muted expectations for the quality of new and returning television shows in 2024. As demonstrated by many of the 2024 Emmy Awards nominations, those fears were unfounded. The 24,000+ members of the Television Academy voters spread the wealth but there were favorites. “Shogun,” “The Bear,” “Only Murders in the Building,” and “True Detective: Night Country ” topped all programs with 25, 23, 21, and 19 nominations respectively.

In hindsight, perhaps the Television Academy’s decision to keep eight nominees for the Drama and Comedy Series categories was a mistake. The former will be fine, but the Drama Series category is something of, well, a potential embarrassment of historic proportions. Last year, was an all-timer in terms of nominees with many great series not making the cut. 2024 already has two previous also-rans, “The Morning Show” and “The Gilded Age,” as locks.

The Writers Guild of America announced the television nominees for the 2022 WGA Awards and while the key categories were filled with a number of familiar programs, an impressive slate of new series made the cut. Both “Yellowjackets,” “Loki,” “Hacks” and “Only Murders in the Building” earned respective Drama Series or Comedy Series nods as well as a New Series nomination. “Reservation Dogs” joined those four as the fifth nominee in the latter category.

So far, and in a relatively short time, we’ve seen coronavirus really begin to take its toll on the film and TV industry. Films are getting delayed. Big films. And now, on the TV side of things, we’re beginning to see shows begin to halt production due to fear of spreading COVID-19 (talk shows and sitcoms with live studio audiences are already being reworked to help prevent possible exposure). And in the case of Apple TV+’s flagship series, “The Morning Show,” there’s not even a positive test or outbreak to blame for the hiatus, as the studio just aims to be proactive and preventative.

Anything is possible. That’s the takeaway after “Parasite” became the first non-English language film to win the Ensemble Cast for a Motion Picture honor at the 2020 SAG Awards. Bong Joon Ho’s Palme d’Or winner shocked by overcoming competition from other Best Picture nominees “The Irishman,” “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood” and “Jojo Rabbit” to take home the Screen Actors Guild’s highest honor. Along with PGA Award winner “1917,” which earned no SAG nominations, its arguably now a co-front runner for Best Picture with final voting set to begin in less than two weeks.

In a night where three awards resulted in ties and a ton of winners didn’t show up, the Critics Choice Association handed out the 2020 Critics Choice Awards top honor, Best Picture, to “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.”  “Joker’s” Joaquin Phoenix took Best Actor while Renee Zellweger won Best Actress for “Judy.”  Bong Joon Ho and Sam Mendes tied for Best Director for “Parasite” and “1917” respectfully.

That moment when Hollywood convenes on the ballroom of the Beverly Hilton to watch 80 or so members of the HFPA crown the winners of the 2020 Golden Globes.  Of course, they’ll also see Tom Hanks and Ellen DeGeneres honored with the Cecile B DeMille and Carol Burnett Awards, respectively.  But, again, despite the millions they give to deserving charities, film conservation groups and press advocacy organizations it’s still the HFPA.

It should go without saying that performances, films and episodic programs the Screen Actors Guild annoints as SAG Awards nominees are not always reflective of the Motion Picture Academy or the Television Academy, for that matter.  But, if you are in the acting branch of either you are 99% likely a member of, arguably, the most powerful union in Hollywood.  And, in the case of the Oscar race, their picks often suggest a direction of consensus opinion for the industry.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced the nominees for the 2020 Golden Globes on Monday morning. On the film side, “Marriage Story” led with six nominations including Best Picture-Drama and nods for stars Adam Driver, Scarlett Johansson and Laura Dern.  On the television side, three programs tied with three nominations; “Chernobyl,” “The Crown” and “Unbelievable.”

The new content platform has a ton of publicity and a large company behind it, but it appears that the early reviews for original series like “The Morning Show,” “Dickinson,” and “See” tempered the expectations of potential subscribers, leading to a less-than-ideal launch for the new streaming service.
