This week, Mars Volta guitarist and co-leader Omar Rodríguez-López will find his new film “The Sentimental Engine Slayer” being premiered at the International Film Festival in Rotterdam.

The film is written, directed, and produced by Rodríguez-López who also stars in the main role Barlam. Judging from the music in available clips, we think it’s safe to assume that he scored the film itself as well. Its story, somewhat ambiguous from the trailer and clip, is semi-autobiographical and documents some of Rodríguez-López’s sex and drug addled experiences growing up in El Paso, Texas

Rodríguez-López is not a first time filmmaker, as he has made four unreleased films “A Manual Dexterity” (the score of which was released as a solo project from the guitarist), “Letters From Dystopia,” “El Divino Influjo De Los Secretos” and “Boiling Death Request.” “Now that I’m dealing with the reality that it is getting invited to these festivals, and that the film is no longer ‘mine,’ I am nervous as all hell!” Rodríguez-López told Wired in a recent interview.

Despite wrapping photography earlier this year, things have generally been quiet as a mouse on the front of Mark Ruffalo’s directorial debut, “Sympathy For Delicious.”

Touted for a potential TIFF premiere and late ’09 release, the film was been completely A.W.O.L. on all accounts; that is except musically. Recently, Montreal indie-rockers The Besnard Lakes were announced as the musicians scoring the picture and they will now be joined by members of prog-rockers The Mars Volta and indie-rockers Shiny Toy Guns who are also contributing musically to Ruffalo’s film.

A film we’ve been greatly anticipating and one that’s about to hit the Toronto Film Festival is the directorial feature film debut of screenwriter Guillermo Arriaga, called “The Burning Plain.”

The every things-always-connected screenwriter behind, “Amores Perros” (2000), “21 Grams” (2003), and “Babel,” (2006), Arriaga is main figure in the Mexican film renaissance in recent years (which includes Guillermo del Toro, Alfonso Cuarón and his now estranged film partner, Alejandro González Iñárritu, who directed the aforementioned every things-always-connected trifecta).
