There’s no one right way to be a vampire, even if it comes with the same sleep schedule. Cinema has helped us grasp this concept over the decades, with variations on the folk horror archetype colored by some most frightening of human feelings: addiction, lust, control, and isolation. For as much as vampires cannot see themselves in the mirror, they’re reflections of ourselves, shapeshifting throughout different cultural periods.

The tradition of vampirism also brings out authorship from directors, with many using the setup for their own expression: the likes of Park Chan-wook, George Romero, Jim Jarmusch, Abel Ferrara, Catherine Hardwicke, Guillermo del Toro, Amy Heckerling, for just a taste.

Joel Schumacher’s filmography could never be described as “boring.” Uneven, sure. Indulgent, maybe. But boring? Never. 

Schumacher was a relentless showman, a flashy, flagrant storyteller who believed that more is always more.  The New York-born director and one-time costume designer made movies that certain audiences and critics loved to hate, and he certainly had all manners of unkind critical pejoratives hurled at him over the course of his long, unpredictable career.

Known most recently as the network with almost every superhero show, The CW also loves their vampires. The network features not one, but two vampire shows in their lineup, with “The Vampire Diaries” and “The Originals.” According to Deadline, with at least one of the shows ending soon, the network is interested in moving forward on a series based on “The Lost Boys.”

Released in 1987, “The Lost Boys” is a film about two brothers who move to a new town and quickly realize it is overrun by vampires.
