Here are our 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 picks.

The mid-aughts were incredibly strong for movies — we dealt with 2005 yesterday, and had to expand the list it was such a good year, while 2007 (coming tomorrow) had several of the very best movies of the whole decade. In between the two, 2006 is less immediately stacked with goodness, but over time has been revealed as a truly great year for genre filmmaking.

Takeshi Kitano Returns to the Gangster Movie; First Look at Justin Timberlake in “The Social Network”

— Japanese superstar Takeshi Kitano has spent much of the decade experimenting, away from the gangster genre in which he made his name, with the likes of “Hana-bi” and “Sonatine” – excellent ninja movie “Zatoichi” was his most accessible departure, but aside from that, he’s drifted to make more delicate, personal films. Now, however, the writer/director/star/all round polymath is set to return to the underworld for the first time since 2000’s “Brother,” with “Outrage”. Kitano will write, direct, and star as a low level boss who becomes embroiled in power struggles among Tokyo gangsters.

Remake City: Russell Brand To Play Bumbling, Drunken Rich Lout For ‘Arthur’ Redo?

Another day, another remake. The most recent boring announcement is the news via The Hollywood Reporter that Russell Brand might step into the role played by Dudley Moore in the comedic and buffoonish “Arthur” series that chronicled a spoiled rich manchild who believed his wealth allowed him the privilege of behaving like a infant at all times (our mom was big on these movies and made us watch them a lot). Warner Bros. is steering this one.

Big-Budget German Film That Threatened Journalists With $100,000+ Fines, ‘Der Baader Meinhof Komplex,’ Selected As German Oscar Hopeful

So much for “A Woman In Berlin,” a German film we saw at the Toronto Film Fest that we thought might have a shot at Foreign Oscar gold. Nope! Germany has selected it’s official Oscar entry and don’t look for some trenchant drama like “The Lives Of Others” (which won the Best Foreign Oscar for Deutschland in 2007), they’ve chosen, “Der Baader Meinhof Komplex,” a shoot-’em up flick that’s a potential blockbuster (at least for Germany).
