All summer long, audiences were wary of sequels and reboots, with many underperforming or outright tanking. And while Fox will likely wind up being happy with the numbers for “Kingsman: The Golden Circle,” it’s safe to say they were hoping for a slightly better result.

The sequel found its way to the top of the box office this weekend, knocking out two-week champion “It.” Earning $39 million, Matthew Vaughn‘s R-rated flick only did slightly better than the $36 million bow of ‘The Secret Service’ two years ago.

While there may be plenty of reasons to scoff, here’s a friendly reminder that whenever you’re ready to dismiss the next movie announcement based on a brand likea “Pez,” “Monopoly” or “Candyland,” there can be exceptions to the rule. An outstanding little animated picture called “The LEGO Movie” was a tooner you sneered at initially too.

‘LEGO’ shouldn’t have worked on paper, but clever filmmakers Phil Lord and Chris Miller proved creative minds could build bricks out of anything by using an imaginative take.

The newest addition to the Lego Universe (who would’ve thought that’d be a thing?) is “The Lego Ninjago Movie” (check out the previous trailer here). The film follows a young master builder who has to fight off an evil warlord.

And often, it means that we don’t include some of the films destined to be among the biggest grossers.

“The Lego Movie” was undoubtedly one of the most pleasant surprises of the last few years: a film that could have so easily been a cynical exercise but that proved to be an inventive, heartfelt delight, and one of the best non-Pixar animated films (and frankly, something that can stand with their best too). Inevitably, its caused Warner Bros. to start the franchise-generating machine, with a direct sequel and various spin-offs in the works.
