Responsible for films like “The Last Picture Show,” “Paper Moon,” and “What’s Up, Doc?” to name a few, the director has experienced the highest highs that Hollywood has to offer. And of course, he’s also experienced some of the lowest lows, particularly in his personal life, which is covered extensively in a new Vulture interview.

A sadly low percentage, however, are any good, which is why this week brings us significant reason to rejoice: First-time filmmaker Kelly Fremon Craig brings us the adorable, sprightly “The Edge Of Seventeen.” In many ways this year’s “The Diary Of A Teenage Girl” in being both the debut of an exciting new female filmmaker and a funny, fresh, newly insightful take on the teen-movie genre, ‘Seventeen’ perhaps does not reinvent the wheel in the way that Marielle Heller‘s film did, but it’s such a bouncy picture, centered around such a tremendously relatable turn from Hailee Steinfeld, that to disparage it as a result would be a little like critiquing a puppy.

This December’s “Tron Legacy” has a dubious distinction: it is a sequel that comes a staggering 28 years after the first film, which must be close to a record. And yet, despite the original proving something of a flop on its release, people seem to be clamoring over the sequel. Whether this borrowed nostalgia for the unremembered 80s (to borrow a phrase from James Murphy) converts into a box-office smash remains to be seen, but it’s not like Disney is the only one in town trying the trick.

Criterion just announced its December slate, and while things are pretty thin, they are finally delivering a powerhouse they teased ages ago: Guillermo del Toro’s debut feature, the vampire parable “Cronos.”

Out December 7th and featuring an eye-popping sleeve designed by “Hellboy” creator Mike Mignola, the new deluxe edition of “Cronos” features a new transfer, supervised and approved by del Toro with new and improved English subtitles (also approved by del Toro). On the special features side of things, we get two audio commentaries, one featuring del Toro and the other with producers Arthur H.

Everyone should have affectionate, but nonetheless ambivalent feelings towards director and cineaste Peter Bogdanovich.

Admiration for his encyclopedic cinephilic knowledge, impossibly good use of ridiculous neck scarves and comedically oversized spectacles and the ability to worm up to Orson Welles and not get bounced out the room immediately…

….and disappointment, perhaps disgust, for trading in on the promise of his early trifecta of immutable classics — “The Last Picture Show,” “What’s Up, Doc?,” “Paper Moon”; all impossibly released between the year 1971-73, dude was on fire — with the subsequent releases of sub par, not-up-to-snuff pictures that most people have forgotten (not to mention disdain for his hubristic success-to-his-head trading-up maneuvers: ditching longtime artistic collaborator and wife, Polly Platt for the younger Cybil Shepard, which perhaps resulted in the karmic comeuppance that was the failure of everything since, aside from “Mask”; we won’t even go into the ignominy of the Dorothy Stratten fiasco).

Not a very busy week on DVD, but some definite highlights. Hey, you can’t keep trying to learn how to find the ‘Wolverine’ workprint online forever.

New Releases: Mickey Rourke lets his Ram out in the Oscar-nominated – “The Wrestler” this week. Darren Aronofsky’s wrasslin’ drama, which earned well-deserved praise, only comes with a 43-minute doc and a music video for Bruce Springsteen’s theme, but the miracle of Rourke’s performance is solid enough to elevate the platter.
