The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the 15 scores that will advance in consideration for the 2020 Best Original Score Oscar. It was no surprise to see Randy Newman’s work on “Marriage Story,” Thomas Newman’s compositions for “1917″ or Marco Beltrami’s score for “Ford v. Ferrari” among the films nominated.  What was surprising was the omission of Randy Newman for “Toy Story 4,” Dan Levy for “I Lost My Body” and, considering it earned a Best Original song nod, Jung Jaeil for “Parasite.” Robbie Robertson’s score for “The Irishman” wasn’t not eligible.

In music, there’s a fine line between homage and stealing. If a song uses a sample from another song, even for a brief moment, then the artist must pay the writer of that original song. But in film, there really isn’t that sort of defined line, per se. If there was, then Netflix and filmmaker David Michôd probably owe HBO and “Game of Thrones” a bit of money because of “The King.”

Now that Michôd’s latest film, “The King,” is now available to stream via Netflix, there are millions of eyeballs watching the historical epic in the comfort of their own home.

Unlike other film studios, Netflix isn’t necessarily concerned with the exact release date for its films. Whereas most traditional studios have to think about the long-term playability of a film and how its box office might affect its awards season aspirations, Netflix doesn’t have to worry about that sort of thing, as the service only puts its high-profile films in theaters for a matter of days before its streaming debut. That being said, Netflix does have quite the busy schedule this fall, as a number of its films are debuting in theaters ahead of their respective streaming launches.

Could we be looking at the first attempt from Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson at some Oscar bait?

As surprising as it might seem, considering his recent output of action films with no shortage of tight shirts and muscle flexing, Johnson has apparently agreed to work with legendary director Robert Zemeckis on the upcoming film “The King,” according to THR.

The report says that “The King” will tell the story of Hawaiian king Kamehameha I, who is known as the founder and first ruler of the land.

Whatever went down on that movie hasn’t affected his relationship with them or Brad Pitt‘s Plan B one bit, as he’s gearing up another movie for the companies starring one of the hottest rising talents in Hollywood.

Deadline reports that “Call Me By Your Name” and “Lady Bird” star Timothée Chalamet has signed up to star in “The King.” Co-written by Joel Edgerton and Michôd, who will also direct, the film is an adaptation of two classic works by Shakespeare, with Chalamet slated to play the young king, Henry V.
