It was no surprise to see Randy Newman’s work on “Marriage Story,” Thomas Newman’s compositions for “1917″ or Marco Beltrami’s score for “Ford v. Ferrari” among the films nominated. What was surprising was the omission of Randy Newman for “Toy Story 4,” Dan Levy for “I Lost My Body” and, considering it earned a Best Original song nod, Jung Jaeil for “Parasite.” Robbie Robertson’s score for “The Irishman” wasn’t not eligible.

If a song uses a sample from another song, even for a brief moment, then the artist must pay the writer of that original song. But in film, there really isn’t that sort of defined line, per se. If there was, then Netflix and filmmaker David Michôd probably owe HBO and “Game of Thrones” a bit of money because of “The King.”

Now that Michôd’s latest film, “The King,” is now available to stream via Netflix, there are millions of eyeballs watching the historical epic in the comfort of their own home.

Films like “The Laundromat,” “Dolemite is My Name,” “The Irishman,” and “Marriage Story” are all original projects released by the streaming service that are getting awards buzz already. Tomorrow, Netflix releases yet another Oscar contender with the film “The King.” And even if the film itself isn’t an Oscars behemoth, there’s no question that the score is worth checking out all by itself.

But the smoke has already cleared from the fall film festival schedule and left standing as the streaming services heavy hitters are “Marriage Story,” Scorsese‘s “The Irishman” and to somewhat a lesser extent, “The Two Popes.” But what about David Michôd‘s “The King” with a star-studded cast led by Timothée Chalamet?

With his finely angular thinness and flop of dark hair, you can see him as a sickly 19th-century aristocrat, or maybe even…. some rebellious boy prince of medieval England. In David Michôd’s new film for Netflix, “The King,” Chalamet takes on King Henry V, playing him as both callow and haughty; he’s a good king and an arrogant youth by equal measure.

Whereas most traditional studios have to think about the long-term playability of a film and how its box office might affect its awards season aspirations, Netflix doesn’t have to worry about that sort of thing, as the service only puts its high-profile films in theaters for a matter of days before its streaming debut. That being said, Netflix does have quite the busy schedule this fall, as a number of its films are debuting in theaters ahead of their respective streaming launches.

Somebody can talk until they’re blue in the face about all the improvements they may make, but it’s a waste of air if nothing is accomplished.

The Venice Film Festival is about to pop off this week which means, welcome to the madness of fall and the annual season when we lose our minds. It’s a terrific time to be a movie lover, a festival goer especially, maybe not so much as movie critic or writer trying to stay on top of it all, but we suppose that’s our problem.

That means, it’s time to pack away the blockbusters—for the most part, anyhow—put away the superhero toys and get ready for the season of adult-centered dramas and awards-contending movies.

READ MORE: The Best Films Of 2019… So Far

With the advent of the fall, we’re going to get a rush of new films, some of them from the Cannes and Sundance film festivals, that are finally hitting North American shores, but also major waves of new titles from the big five film festivals: Venice, Telluride, the Toronto International Film Festival, Fantastic Fest, and the New York Film Festival.

Even at such a young age, the actor has found himself in the enviable position of being able to pick and choose his films. This has led Chalamet to really only lending his services to films that will clearly be up for awards consideration. Not a bad position to be in, as an actor, at all. So, this year, in addition to “Little Women,” Chalamet has a starring role in the awards contender “The King,” which is set to premiere at Venice.

And kicking it off right is perhaps the biggest fest of the season, Venice. With the initial lineup of films hitting Venice coming next week, we are starting to get word on which projects are likely going to Italy.

It’s true!), December has rolled around and the light at the end of the 2018 tunnel is in sight. And around these parts, that means that it’s time to roll out the annual smorgasbord of year-end features, looking at the best, and sometimes worst, of the year in film and TV.

As surprising as it might seem, considering his recent output of action films with no shortage of tight shirts and muscle flexing, Johnson has apparently agreed to work with legendary director Robert Zemeckis on the upcoming film “The King,” according to THR.

The report says that “The King” will tell the story of Hawaiian king Kamehameha I, who is known as the founder and first ruler of the land.

However, judging by the cast he’s put together for his newest Netflix film, Michôd seems poised to make some waves next year.

Known from his direction on documentaries “The Trials of Henry Kissinger,” “Why We Fight,” and “Reagan” Jarecki is no stranger to sprawling narrative documentaries – and “The King” is no exception.

Whatever went down on that movie hasn’t affected his relationship with them or Brad Pitt‘s Plan B one bit, as he’s gearing up another movie for the companies starring one of the hottest rising talents in Hollywood.

Deadline reports that “Call Me By Your Name” and “Lady Bird” star Timothée Chalamet has signed up to star in “The King.” Co-written by Joel Edgerton and Michôd, who will also direct, the film is an adaptation of two classic works by Shakespeare, with Chalamet slated to play the young king, Henry V.
