Amazon made a wise choice to give so much love to “The Kids in the Hall.” The revitalization of the five-piece comedy troupe — with a new two-part SXSW documentary, “The Kids in the Hall: Comedy Punks,” and the series you’re about to read a review of — proves just how in line their humor continues to be with what is funny, and what is deliciously but positively inappropriate, in 2022.

It’s not as well known as it was in Canada, but during the ’80s and ’90s, “The Kids In The Hall” was one of the most beloved sketch comedies up North, the heir apparent of SCTV. Consisting of comedians Dave Foley, Bruce McCulloch, Kevin McDonald, Mark McKinney, and Scott Thompson, “The Kids In The Hall” aired for five seasons from 1988 to 1995, then there was the 1996 movie, “Kids in the Hall: Brain Candy.” But besides reunion tours, one-offs, and the 2010 “Death Comes to Town” mini-series, that was basically the extent of the ‘Kids.’ Members found success in Hollywood and scattered around to different projects (Dave Foley was notably the first breakout star who had a long run on the American sitcom “NewsRadio”).

As a teen growing up in the ‘90s, my exposure to “The Kids in the Hall” was over re-runs that aired at odd times throughout the day on Comedy Central. But make not mistake, when an episode aired, the Canadian sketch comedy series was must-see TV. For many comedy fans, ‘Kids’ was the weird cousin of ‘SNL,’ with some very strange characters and a much smaller group of actors.
