Let this weekend be a study in recognizable advertising versus selling something a bit off the beaten path. Two distinctly aged box office behemoths battled this weekend, with Sylvester Stallone’s “The Expendables” defeating Julia Roberts’ “Eat Pray Love,” and both handily outdistancing the offbeat “Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World.” Lionsgate finally opens something that isn’t a “Saw” or Tyler Perry movie, Sony takes the safe bet, and Universal continues a banner year during which they took baths on “Green Zone,” “The Wolfman” and “Robin Hood.”

Marketing tells the story of this weekend, as Lionsgate has been pushing “The Expendables” hard for months now.

The Will Ferrell-Adam McKay teaming still works gangbusters. Each film they’ve teamed up for has done at least $85 million, with $30-something-million openings a virtual guarantee at this point. McKay doesn’t seem to be a selling point, so there must be some sort of pedigree the audience recognizes in the “real” Ferrell movies he does with McKay as opposed to the other, lesser films he does in between. The opening weekend of his last starring role, last year’s “Land of the Lost,” was only half of what “The Other Guys” is expected to do after final estimates.

That’s three straight weekends of Chris Nolan’s “Inception” as the ruler of the roost. While the competition wasn’t stellar, the dream-attack heist picture posted a muscular hold to survive being outgrossed by “Dinner For Schmucks” on Friday with its stronger IMAX pricing scam/business strategy. It’s hard to say the film has become a definitive zeitgeist-grabber, but it’s a water-cooler film, no doubt, and while it might not crest $300 million, it’s sure to cross $200m by mid-week.

By and large, studios have somewhat agreed to play nice during the major moviegoing periods of the year, agreeing to space out their major releases so that each studio can have their own weekend to themselves, with the other majors and mini-majors offering only smaller counter-programming. As a result, Sony had no real competition opening this weekend against their action thriller “Salt” and it was reflected in a solid opening frame that firmed up Angelina Jolie’s rep as one of Hollywood’s more versatile stars.

If you don’t like kids, it was probably best to stay away from the movie theater this weekend. Between the $60.1 million that top-earner “Despicable Me” brought in and “Toy Story 3″‘s $22 million, your local megaplex likely felt more like a daycare center (shudder). With “Despicable Me,” Universal continues to try to break into the animation market dominated by Pixar, Disney, and DreamWorks, and this is their most successful attempt yet. The Steve Carell-voiced film trounced the previous opening weekends of their earlier films “Coraline” ($16.8 million), “The Tale of Despereaux” ($10.1 million), and “Curious George” ($14.7 million).

For those of you keeping track at home, this is our third piece on Lisa Cholodenko’s indie comedy this week, after a solo interview with the filmmaker and a glowing review. And although it might seem like we’re performing the journalistic equivalent of sexual favors on “The Kids Are All Right” for three straight days, trust us: the pleasure is all ours. Cholodenko’s film is a solid, character-driven comedy that doesn’t rely on wacky situations or bodily functions for its humor; instead it earns our laughs by what we know of its entirely human characters.

US theaters seem to collectively be taking a breath this week, in anticipation of bigger weeks to come, with just two new releases going wide, the animated 3D “Despicable Me” for the kids, and the live action, non 3D “Predators” for everyone else. Any other week we suspect the latter would be a smaller b- release and the former a pale Pixar me-too, but as it stands both should benefit from a relative lack of competition for their core audiences right now, with “Toy Story 3” having done the majority of its business after 3 weeks, “Knight and Day” tanking, and the box office domination of “Twilight: Eclipse” meaning teenage boys are feeling unusually underserved at their local multiplex.

If Nancy Meyers of “It’s Complicated” and “The Holiday” fame wrote about lesbians — and actually had talent — she might have made “The Kids Are All Right.” Like Meyers, filmmaker Lisa Cholodenko crafts a movie actually made with adults in mind as an audience (and features some gorgeous, glossy-worthy house porn), but Cholodenko doesn’t rely on unlikely, Ephron-aping meet-cutes and groan-worthy dialogue. Instead, “The Kids Are All Right” feels bracingly authentic — and entirely entertaining — in its picture of a middle-aged marriage whose participants just happen to be two women.

It’s been eight years since “Laurel Canyon” and six since her little-seen Showtime TV film, “Cavedweller,” but indie filmmaker Lisa Cholodenko (“High Art”) hasn’t been wasting time. In fact, perhaps her new film, the sharply written and affecting Sundance 2010 hit, “The Kids Are All Right” demonstrates that taking your time to craft a screenplay can really pay off. Cholodenko always flirted with greatness in the uneven, but always interesting, “High Art” and “Laurel Canyon,” but the raves from Sundance have been justifiable — “The Kids Are All Right” is easily her finest work to date and a terrifically funny and moving film.

Yesterday we sat down with Josh Hutcherson, one of the stars of Lisa Cholodenko’s excellent upcoming dramedy, “The Kids Are All Right,” starring Annette Benning, Julianna Moore, Mark Ruffalo and Mia Wasikowska (“Alice In Wonderland”).

The film is wonderful, one of our faves so far this year, but let’s not kid ourselves, top of everyone’s minds at the moment is whether Hutcherson will star in Marc Webb’s 3D re-imagining of “Spider-Man” which hopes to shoot by the end of the year in time for a July 3, 2012 release date.

A new poster for Todd Solondz’s “Life During Wartime” has arrived and it’s basically a more illustrated version of the already released U.K. one, and frankly we liked the English version better (and surely that will sell the picture better too). The film is a quasi sequel to Solondz’s “Happiness” and stars Allison Janney, Ciarán Hinds, Paul Reubens (aka “Pee Wee Herman”) and Ally Sheedy among many others.

The soundtrack to Lisa Cholodenko’s upcoming Sundance hit “The Kids Are All Right” has been announced and it’s a pretty great mix of current indie rock bands (MGMT, Deerhoof, CSS, Fever Ray) and classics (X, David Bowie, Joni Mitchell, Leon Russell). Some new photos have been released on the film’s Facebook page too.

The 17-track album comes out August 3rd, but digitally on July 6th. The Focus Features film (which we’re kind of dying to see at this point in the summer dearth we’ve been delivered so far) hits theaters July 9.

Variety reports that Michael Sheen (“Frost/Nixon”) and Toni Collette will be headlining the family-comedy “Jesus Henry Christ.” The film is being directed by Dennis Lee, who is basing the feature off of his 2003 Academy Award-winning student film of the same name.

The story follows a boy, conceived in a petri dish, that discovers a whole new world upon meeting his half-sister. He eventually finds way to his biological father’s whereabouts, and (we bet) hilarity ensues.

The first trailer and poster have been unveiled for Lisa Chodolenko’s family dramedy, “The Kids Are All Right,” which took both the Sundance and Berlin Film Festivals by storm earlier this year.

The film stars Annette Benning and Julianne Moore as same-sex parents whose world is turned upside down when their children (Mia Wasikowska and Josh Hutcherson) bring the sperm-donor father, played by Mark Ruffalo, back into their lives. Things evidently become increasingly complicated when one of the mothers (Moore) becomes involved with the donor, whose developing stature in the family causes troubles.
