Top 10 lists are great. Even when you disagree with the picks, there’s something about a Top 10 list of films that just begs to be debated. But you know what’s better than a thousand words written by someone explaining why these films are the best of the year? A music video!

The Playlist contributor Oktay Ege Kozak has compiled his best of 2019 into a four-minute video that includes some of the best scenes from each film edited together with “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” as performed by Taron Egerton in “Rocketman.” It’s a well-made video that concisely presents the top 20 of 2019 in a way that shows the artistry and, no matter what you think of the choices themselves, the scenes chosen are worthy of showcasing.

We want to be more enthused about what’s coming to theaters this month, but following the whirlwind of the fall/Christmas season, an overwhelming onslaught of continual great cinematic output, it’s difficult not to feel the January slump. Time of the year doesn’t as frequently dictate quality, as it used to, seeing plenty of films with February and March release, dates that both critically and commercially flourish, but January still can’t shake the dumping ground mentality for films that studios didn’t quite know what to do with.

Where’s filmmaker Joe Cornish been for the last seven odd years? Well, in 2011, to rewind, he released the critically acclaimed coming of age, sci-fi film “Attack The Block” which launched the careers of John Boyega and Jodie Whittaker and came off like a modern, darker, British riff on Steven Spielberg Amblin films. And he co-wrote “Ant-Man” with Edgar Wright for years which came to no avail when Wright and Marvel parted ways last minute (and co-wrote Spielberg’s “Tintin” also with Wright).

Will audiences ever get to see “The New Mutants?”

Obviously, Fox has committed a large amount of money and time to the project, and it would take something catastrophic for the studio to completely erase the film from its release schedule. However, at the rate its going now, it doesn’t feel like we’ll ever see the film’s release. Especially considering Fox just announced that “The New Mutants,” superhero film “X-Men: Dark Phoenix,” and several other films are seeing their release dates shuffle, yet again.

“Attack The Block” was one of the most thrilling genre debuts in recent years. Seeing a bunch of no-good London kids go up against an alien invasion, it was funny, exciting, surprising, energetic and featured a cast of future stars (it marked the debut of John Boyega, and future “Doctor Who” lead Jodie Whittaker was the female lead too). It should have made director Joe Cornish one of themost hotly sought-after directors around.

Joe Cornish’s “Attack The Block” came out almost exactly six years ago, and was one of the very best directorial debuts of recent years: an utterly thrilling, tonally assured sci-fi picture that, among its many merits, helped to break “Star Wars” lead John Boyega out. But dispiritingly, Cornish hasn’t made another movie since.

He had writing credit on “Ant-Man” and “The Adventures Of Tintin” with occasional partner-in-crime Edgar Wright, was linked to various studio gigs including “Gambit,” “Kong: Skull Island” and “Star Trek Beyond,” and has had a number of his own projects in development including cyberpunk thriller “Snow Crash,” comic book adaptation “Rust” and period spy actioner “Section 6,” but none came to pass in the end.
