Even when you disagree with the picks, there’s something about a Top 10 list of films that just begs to be debated. But you know what’s better than a thousand words written by someone explaining why these films are the best of the year? A music video!

The Playlist contributor Oktay Ege Kozak has compiled his best of 2019 into a four-minute video that includes some of the best scenes from each film edited together with “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” as performed by Taron Egerton in “Rocketman.” It’s a well-made video that concisely presents the top 20 of 2019 in a way that shows the artistry and, no matter what you think of the choices themselves, the scenes chosen are worthy of showcasing.

With common sense dictating that the films being named by the Academy as the best of the year will get a bump at the box office, analysts are always curious about which films will spark renewed interest from film fans and which can’t even benefit from a bit more notoriety. This weekend also had the added bonus of a highly divisive adult thriller, a critically-acclaimed kids film from an up and coming director, and a flurry of holiday leftovers still staking a claim.

And of course, probably the biggest draw for film fans is the fact that the film marks the return for director Joe Cornish after his incredible “Attack the Block.” But there’s also an aspect of the film that is sure to make people happy that we hope to highlight today – the score.

While Generation X endured the vanished promises of the post-Boomer years with self-aware malaise, young people today face a world that is apocalyptic on almost every front while a sociological mood of self-preservation over the common good pervades Western cultures. It is literal Doom and Gloom, as writer/director Joe Cornish splashes across newspaper headlines in his slyly subversive “The Kid Who Would Be King.” Using major studio money, Cornish’s sophomore effort joins the recent “Paddington” movies in blending socially conscious messages within terrifically sharp and entertaining family entertainment, creating a unique moment in British film that hopefully doesn’t end here.

Time of the year doesn’t as frequently dictate quality, as it used to, seeing plenty of films with February and March release, dates that both critically and commercially flourish, but January still can’t shake the dumping ground mentality for films that studios didn’t quite know what to do with.

Well, in 2011, to rewind, he released the critically acclaimed coming of age, sci-fi film “Attack The Block” which launched the careers of John Boyega and Jodie Whittaker and came off like a modern, darker, British riff on Steven Spielberg Amblin films. And he co-wrote “Ant-Man” with Edgar Wright for years which came to no avail when Wright and Marvel parted ways last minute (and co-wrote Spielberg’s “Tintin” also with Wright).

Obviously, Fox has committed a large amount of money and time to the project, and it would take something catastrophic for the studio to completely erase the film from its release schedule. However, at the rate its going now, it doesn’t feel like we’ll ever see the film’s release. Especially considering Fox just announced that “The New Mutants,” superhero film “X-Men: Dark Phoenix,” and several other films are seeing their release dates shuffle, yet again.

Lord knows we need things to keep us going in the shitshow that has been the second half of the 2010s, and fortunately, cinema has provided.

After a slow start, 2017 turned out to be a pretty great year for movies, and 2018 looks to keep that up in a big way.

Seeing a bunch of no-good London kids go up against an alien invasion, it was funny, exciting, surprising, energetic and featured a cast of future stars (it marked the debut of John Boyega, and future “Doctor Who” lead Jodie Whittaker was the female lead too). It should have made director Joe Cornish one of themost hotly sought-after directors around.

But dispiritingly, Cornish hasn’t made another movie since.

He had writing credit on “Ant-Man” and “The Adventures Of Tintin” with occasional partner-in-crime Edgar Wright, was linked to various studio gigs including “Gambit,” “Kong: Skull Island” and “Star Trek Beyond,” and has had a number of his own projects in development including cyberpunk thriller “Snow Crash,” comic book adaptation “Rust” and period spy actioner “Section 6,” but none came to pass in the end.
