But when you add in a dash of superpowers, suddenly you have children that are perhaps the stuff of nightmares, such as in “The Innocents.”

As seen in the new trailer for “The Innocents,” the film follows the story of a group of young children who find out that they might have psychic powers.

Until the Renaissance, artists were still painting them as freakish shriveled adults. Only in the last century-ish did American society decide they probably should go to school instead of laboring all day in sweatshops. And though modernity affords parents all the luxuries of developmental psychology and helicopter parenting, perhaps children still remain more of a mystery than we may think. In “The Innocents,” which debuted in the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival, Norwegian filmmaker Eskil Vogt (Joachim Trier‘s longtime screenwriter, who also directs) posits that we don’t know much about children at all.

Well, lucky for us, some of the best filmmakers in the world have revealed their favorite horror film moments and it provides a pretty great list of what films to enjoy.

Edgar Wright, Alice Lowe, Karyn Kusama, Anna Biller, and Panos Cosmatos spoke to the Guardian recently and explain why the five moments they’ve chosen are the five scariest ever put to film.

In the new Netflix series “The Innocents,” two teens run away to be together, but when one of the teens finds out she has the ability to shape-shift and become other people, all hell breaks loose.

Seriously, being able to shape-shift really must be the worst. The trailer for the series shows that June, the shape-shifting teen, is struggling to keep control of her abilities.

The ’60s was the decade when ratings boards were put into precarious positions by rebel filmmakers and were pressured to condemn or even ban films that were being deemed by advocate groups as “morally wrong.” The decade in cinema might have not been as groundbreaking and envelope-pushing had it not started with a bang.

Starring Rooney Mara and Casey Affleck, “A Ghost Story,” shouldn’t work. A moving and existential movie about longing, love, sadness and the immensity of time, it’s about a man that dies, but lingers as an apparition as his wife eventually moves on with her life. But it’s a movie where the ghost is simply a white sheet over Casey Affleck’s head, but nonetheless, the experience is still deeply emotional and profound, creating a spellbinding picture about loss told from the point of view of silent, motionless ghost.

There were plenty of new movies on hand, but one that has been in cinemas for a few weeks continued to dominate, while another from the pioneer of the modern blockbuster failed to connect.

Disney/Pixar‘s “Finding Dory” spent July 4th at the top of the box office for its third straight week.

But the particular perplex in which the devout must reconcile their faith with the horror of conflict is not often cinematically depicted with the kind of central focus demonstrated in “The Innocents.” Director Anne Fontaine’s film is based on actual events and grapples with thorny questions that plague even the most zealous during times of crisis.
