Obviously, some of 2021’s bigger blockbusters still have (tentative) release dates (see our massive 100 Most Anticipated Films Of 2021 feature): we’re thinking of Denis Villeneuve’s hotly-anticipated “Dune” adaptation, which was supposed to be in theaters last December, and also Adam Wingard’s long-delayed “Godzilla Vs.

And now, it appears that Sony Pictures Classics is ready to begin its Oscar campaign with a new trailer for the acclaimed short film.

As seen in the new trailer for “The Human Voice,” the short is the English-langue debut for Almodóvar and stars Tilda Swinton as a woman that is pining after her ex-lover who is supposed to arrive to pick up his things.

So many parts of our traditional filmgoing experience have been snatched away, for now, while so many of us wait at home for the whole thing to be done. This has meant a lot of things on a lot of levels, but crucially, for this exercise, it means we’ve been staring at the same four walls of our home for quite some time now.

One is a director that is in the discussion as the very best in the entire world, while the other is an actress that always makes interesting choices but never fails to impress no matter the film. Together, they have combined forces for a new short film, “The Human Voice,” and we have the first trailer to tease audiences into a frenzy with a story of longing and desire, wrapped in exquisite costuming and music.

Not just the industry, but film festivals where everyone gathers in close quarters. COVID-19 killed the SXSW Film Festival, the Cannes Film Festival, the Telluride Film Festival and has ensured that the Toronto International Film Festival will be all but virtual for all American critics (there will be public screenings for Canadians).

And as a way of showing what that means, the NYFF organizers announced the Spotlight section for this year’s fest.

For many film fans, it doesn’t get better than those two. However, there is a fatal flaw with their upcoming collaboration, “The Human Voice.” You see, it’s only a short and not feature-length. And honestly, will 30 minutes be enough to fully enjoy the combination of the two?

While we still have yet to see the full short, as it is expected to do the fall film festival circuit first, Agustin Almódovar, producer and brother of Pedro, was gracious enough to share the first clip from the upcoming short.

And for his follow-up projects, it appears that Almodóvar is going in a new direction, with two English-language projects.
