It was admittedly hard to express a lot of interest in new films when my brain was just that gif of Dorinda from “Real Housewives of New York” spitting, “I’ll tell you how I’m doing! Not well, bitch!” playing on a loop. Film felt frivolous, with the collapse of many industries, the rise in homelessness, the lack of leadership, the absence of infrastructure to support and protect people, and continued racial injustice waking people up to systems and paradigms of inequity.

For many of us (though we New Englanders have had to suffer a bit longer) it’s officially Spring, which typically means more time to spend outdoors and less time to spend catching up on films. Considering the state of things though, we won’t jump to that conclusion too quickly. May isn’t rich with new releases, but there are plenty of gems among them including a film that’s already debuted on Netflix to positive reviews, a re-scheduled Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani comedy and a final return of the “The Trip” duo Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon.

The 2020 Tribeca Film Festival might have been canceled, but that doesn’t mean the event is gone. Similar to how SXSW 2020 handled things this year, Tribeca decided to allow the juries to take a look at the films in competition and hand out awards. And this year, the big winner is actually a film that everyone is able to see very shortly—Alice Wu’s “The Half of It.”

While “Tiger King” seems to have people on the true-crime side happy for the time being, “The Half of It” hopes to appease those seeking a bit of romance during this global pandemic.

“The Half of It” follows the story of a lonely girl in a small town that is paid to write a series of love letters on behalf of a hapless jock hoping to impress the prettiest girl in school.
