There used to be a time when the period romantic drama was thriving. You could find it on the BBC, nearly every Oscar race of the ‘80s and ‘90s and when Harvey Weinstein found some cache, he certainly pursued this kind of picture relentlessly even up until TWC’s essentially last movie, “Tulip Fever,” due to the Academy’s fondness for them. These days the breed is somewhat rare, but given that the content-hungry Netflix seemingly needs an oversaturation of all kinds of genre, romantic period dramas, in this case, a British one set during WWII, have been able to find a home on their streaming channel.

Lately, Netflix has been seen by many as the dumping ground for studio films. Whether it’s the mediocre “The Cloverfield Paradox,” released as a stunt on Super Bowl Sunday, or the amazing “Annihilation,” Netflix has been buying up films that studios just are scared to release. It looks like the latest film to get the Netflix release treatment is “The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society.”

According to Variety, Netflix has bought the distribution rights for ‘Potato Peel Society,’ and will release the film in a variety of markets, including the U.S.

Once upon a time Kenneth Branagh was slated to direct, while Kate Winslet and Rebecca Ferguson both rotated out of the lead role. Now, Lily James, who recently spent some time by the side of Gary Oldman‘s Winston Churchill in “Darkest Hour,” returns to the horror of WWII for this historical drama.
