Writer-director Jim Hosking doesn’t think like a regular filmmaker, or, at least, in the narratively conventional sense. What is most important to Hosking, who first gained attention for his film “The Greasy Strangler,” is to create a world only he can conceive. His films are filled with the kind of unique characters that you have never seen before in cinema. And because of this, the filmmaker has his fair share of detractors, but the fact that Hosking has managed to find a way to break out of the mold with such a unique brand of filmmaking is something to celebrate.

It’s one down and hopefully many more to come for the American Independent Film Awards. The group issued their inaugural awards over the weekend, celebrating the best films of 2016 that worked with budgets of $1 million or less.

Leading the pack with five wins was Trey Edward Shults‘ “Krisha,” as it picked up Best Film, Best Director, Best Lead Performance, Best Score, and Best Original Screenplay.

As December rolls along (only twenty more shopping days until Christmas!) the awards keeping coming, and over the weekend, it was the folks at the British Independent Film Awards turn to hand out the honors. In the scrum of the Sundance Film Festival, it can sometimes be hard to get noticed, but the low-budget “The Greasy Strangler” certainly raised a few eyebrows in Park City. Our own review called it “disgusting, deviant, and pleasurably weird,” but others couldn’t get past the vibe of the wholly unique picture. But credit to FilmRise to snapping up the rights and taking a chance on the movie.
