If that sentence means nothing to you, it’s all the more reason you need to watch Mike Nichols‘ “The Graduate,” and there’s never been a better time to see it for the first time (or give it another viewing).

Starring Dustin Hoffman and Anne Bancroft, the film follows a graduate with some post-collegiate malaise, who winds up caught in a love triangle of sorts between an older woman and her daughter.

To watch a movie is to feel through others, to experience lives and cultures beyond your own or, sometimes, to relate in ways you never could before. The best films invite you to love and care, to believe you’re close to strangers and nestle inside their thoughts, their laughs, their sorrows and their pains. To watch a movie is to become someone else, if for a fleeting moment.

It’s sappy and corny to say as much, but that’s the same with Valentine’s Day.

Griffith‘s obsession with Lillian Gish‘s angelic face were examples of cinema’s paramount shots.

Two fascinating directors, one who has had a strong influence on American mainstream cinema, the other a little less known but all the more adored, are now having their films displayed at two very respectable venues in New York City. The two are Mike Nichols and Jules Dassin, and they have definitely left their mark on cinema during their extensive careers.

Mr. Nichols, aged 77, is having his most prestigious work displayed at the Modern Museum of Art (no better place) from April 14 to May 1, and having an “informal conversation” on April 18, with cohorts Nora Ephron, Buck Henry (writer of Nichols’ “The Graduate,” and “Catch 22”) and Elaine May.
