2008 is obviously still on the brain and at will be at least for the next week if not longer. Here’s ten films we thought were grossly underrated. We were going to title this the 10 Most Underrated Films of 2008, but someone would have surely balked, only because we haven’t posted our top 20 list yet. These were definitely under-appreciated in our book though.

Colin Farell and Brendan Gleeson starred as contract killers sent to the medieval Belgian city of Bruges after a botched hit at the behest of their loose cannon boss Ralph Fiennes.

Why Indie-Twee, 20-Something Movies Can Be Totally Ghey – Is ‘500 Days Of Summer’ The Shins Of Indie Movies?

“Juno,” “The Wackness,” “Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist,” “Garden State” even “The Go-Getter,” one of our friends calls these indie-friendly flicks, “The Shins of Indie Movies,” i.e., the pleasant, but completely toothless and innocuous indie-rock band on Sub Pop records that many of us enjoy, but all are completely aware aren’t exactly high art or life-changing.

These are the “offbeat” and “quirky” romance movies places like Stereogum, Pitchfork and the younger movie crowd tend to adore and we must admit we anticipate and even enjoy many of them too (of the above, “The Go-Getter” is our fave and the least indie offensive), but it’s undeniable that some of these “indie hipster” films can be obnoxious, sickeningly twee and cringe-inducing in their emo-ness.

Most cross-country jaunts telegraph their every move, the on-the-nose map archs have been predetermined and the destination is as predictable as the archetype, so its gratifying to find a vibrant version that’s pulsing with discovery and possibility.

Germs Biopic ‘What We Do Is Secret’ Hitting U.S. Theaters In August

The long-completed Germs biopic, “What We Do Is Secret” will finally hit U.S. theaters in August via Peach Arch Entertainment – the same company putting out “The Go-Getter” – according to Billboard.

Initial screenings will be held New York (Aug. 8), Chicago (Aug. 15) and Los Angeles (Aug. 23) and the picture may roll out into other major markets depending on how it performs (which seems to be the cautious approach that the new fledgling Peach Arch seems to have for all their releases, again, see ‘Go-Getter’).

Martin Hynes Talks M. Ward, The Origins Of She & Him And The Music of ‘The Go-Getter’

In searching for the songs that would guide the “The Go-Getter,” director Martin Hynes‘ producer suggested going to check out a Bright Eyes show with special guests ( My Morning Jacket’s Jim James and producer Matt Mogis). Unbeknownst to Hynes, a singer songwriter named M. Ward was also at the beginning of the bill, but the indie-rock savvy filmmaker didn’t know his material at the time. When the Portland indie rocker hit the stage, Hynes was instantly floored with the singer’s timeless, achey indie-folk.

‘Go-Getter’ Director Inspired By Black Keys Song, Wong Kar-Wai For ‘4 AM Automatic’

Director Martin Hynes, the filmmaker behind the excellent and modest indie-road trip film, “The Go-Getter,” has been kind enough to give us a lot of his time, so we’ve got a few stories to roll out about the film and what he’s up to next.

Featuring Lou Taylor Pucci, Zooey Deschanel and Jenna Malone, “The Go Getter” comes out in limited releases June 6, and Hynes – who also directed the 1999 film “The Big Split,” and starred as a young George Lucas in the indie feature “George Lucas in Love” – is already looking ahead to his next feature which he hopes to shoot next year.

So we finally saw “The Go-Getter” – the roadtrip indie directed by Martin Hynes starring Lou Taylor Pucci, Zooey Deschanel, Jena Malone and the film that basically inspired the formation of She & Him – the duo of M. Ward and Zooey Deschanel (Ward scored the film and lent many, many songs to the flick – the pair met while working on the film and by recording the film’s final song, a cover of Richard and Linda Thompson’s road classic, “When I Get To The Border”).

Exclusive: ‘Go-Getter’ Film Getting June 6 NY, L.A. Release Date; Soundtrack Features M. Ward & Zooey Deschanel

Yes, it’s true, there’s a small, but fervent constituency of fans and followers desperate to see the Lou Taylor Pucci, Zooey Deschanel film, “The Go-Getter” (directed by Martin Hynes), and after months of silence and speculation, a source very close to the production has confirmed to us that the film will see its first official release in New York, Los Angeles and Toronto on June 6.

Who’s releasing it and will it go wide after that?

Zooey Deschanel And M. Ward Get Their Inner Girl Group On

So Zooey Deschanel and M.Ward met while making a cover of Richard and Linda Thompson’s “If I Get To The Border” for the indie-film “The Go-Getter,” starring Lou Taylor Pucci (the breakout star of “Thumbsucker“), Zooey Deschanel and Jena Malone.

The two hit it off so well, Deschanel soon overcame shyness to mention to Ward she wrote songs and eventually sent him demos. Impressed, the Portland based songwriter wanted more and the two met up to record and produce.

Zooey Deschanel’s She And Him Volume One Collaboration With M. Ward Due In March

So Zooey Deschanel was on KCRW’s “Open Road” program on Sunday (January 6) night. On the show, (which you can’t listen to yet) host Gary Calamar mentioned that Deschanel’s upcoming album with M. Ward is scheduled to come out in March under the title Volume One.

Guess that would imply they’ll be more music to come, huh? No information on what record company is putting the disc out, but we’re sure more information will surface soon enough.

Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward Album Due Early 2008

Apparently when “The Go-Getter” director Martin Hynes asked Deschanel (who stars in the film) to duet with M. Ward and cover Richard and Linda Thompson’s “When I Get To The Border,” they hit it off and from there, their collaboration grew organically.

From the Vanity Fair Movies Rock issue:

When Deschanel mentioned that she wrote songs, Ward asked to hear them. “I was amazed by the quality,” he says, and soon he was producing her debut album, which is expected early next year.

M.Ward and Zooey Deschanel Collaborative Album Tracks Surface

So, are these new songs from the film “The Go-Getter” which features the timid folkie M. Ward and doe-eyed actress Zooey Deschanel cover of British folkie ex-husband and wife duo Richard and Linda Thompson? [ed. which we’ve written about a few times].

Survey says, doesn’t look like it. The tracklist for “The Go-Getter” (below) indicates that only one song from the soundtrack is a Ward/Deschanel cover, plus M.Ward superfans Pitchfork reported a full-on collaboration a few months back.
