Apparently, Gloria Steinem is such an iconic figure in American history, she’s too big for just one woman to portray her in the upcoming biopic, aptly titled “The Glorias.” But as seen in the trailer, the use of multiple women in the role of Steinem allows for Julie Taymor to tell the complete story of one of Feminism’s pivotal supporters.

In “The Glorias,” Taymor utilizes Julianne Moore, Alicia Vikander, Lulu Wilson, and Ryan Keira Armstrong to portray Steinem in crucial moments over the course of her life, telling the full breadth of the political figure’s personal and professional history.

LD Entertainment and Roadside Attractions‘ upcoming Gloria Steinem biopic, aptly titled “The Glorias,” was scheduled to debut in theaters sometime this fall. However, with the pandemic still making theatrical debuts a bit precarious, the distributors have decided to skip the big screen and release Julie Taymor’s latest feature directly on Amazon Prime Video and VOD.

There’s good news and bad news regarding Julie Taymor’s Sundance film “The Glorias” and its September 25 release date. The good news is that the film is only being delayed by several days, arriving on September 30. However, the bad news is that you won’t be able to see the feature in theaters, as the film’s distributors, Roadside Attractions and LD Entertainment, have decided to release the film straight to streaming.

Conventional biopics are inherently tricky to pull off. Condensing an extraordinary life into 2 hours or less often leads to compromise, a shallow greatest hits reading, or something akin to a rote Wikipedia recap. Negotiating those hurdles while telling an entertaining story and trying to capture what made the subject’s life so special to begin with is even tougher. Thankfully, Julie Taymor (“Across The Universe“) takes a more unconventional, though not always successful, approach in her latest film—somewhat akin to Todd Haynes’ approach to Bob Dylan in “I’m Not There,” but not as bold— about feminist icon, journalist Gloria Steinem in “The Glorias.” Despite an absence from the screen for a decade, Taymor’s latest manages to be both a loving tribute to American trailblazer and the power of collective action to bring social change.
