As movie studios try to figure out how make their films critic proof, they can at least rest assured horror movies will always bring audiences out no matter the reviews. And this weekend, moviegoers wanted to get scared.

“Annabelle: Creation” led the pack at the box office, hauling in $35 million. It’s slightly under the $37 million launch of its predecessor, but ‘Creation’ fared much better with critics, and with a low budget of $15 million its going to earn a decent buck for New Line.

Then mostly known as a comedic actor, with roles in films like “21 Jump Street” and “Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World,” Larson convinced everyone of her dramatic chops in her “Short Term 12” performance, which paved the way to a deserving Oscar win two years later in “Room.”

Considering their alchemy, it’s little wonder the duo reteamed for “The Glass Castle,” an adaptation of Jeannette Walls’ 2005 memoir about her severe family dysfunction.

In case you haven’t been paying much attention, the summer 2017 season has been a rather strong one. Sure, we still had to content with the poorly conceived sequel here and there, but despite “The Emoji Movie” dealing such a ridiculous blow to a slate that, up until this point, had been impressive, ultimately, there were more than enough quality films to find. It’s a loooong way until we see Brie Larson kicking superhero ass in “Captain Marvel,” but the actress has a full slate in the year ahead.
