Every year, GLAAD likes to shine a light on films and TV series that are going above and beyond to present fair, accurate, and inclusive representations of LGBTQ people and issues. These awards aren’t there to mirror the Academy Awards or Golden Globes, but for the LGBTQ community, these are the films and TV series that GLAAD feels are the best of 2018.

However, with that being said, there’s one major omission from this year’s awards – “Bohemian Rhapsody.” While your mileage may vary on how well you think the film presented the LGBTQ community, it’s hard to ignore a film that grossed $800 million worldwide and featured a queer character at its core.

Children’s movies are critic-proof, that much is obvious. And showing just how much kids don’t care about what the critical reaction is to an animated film, “The Grinch” easily dominated it’s debut weekend, with a massive showing at the box office.

Benedict Cumberbatch’s remake of the classic Christmas tale, “The Grinch,” pulled in an estimated $66 million this weekend to debut atop the box office. This type of debut is only mildly surprising when you consider the Rotten Tomatoes average for the film currently sits at 55%.

In only a relatively short amount of time, Lisbeth Salander has become one of the most iconic heroes in modern fiction. She’s a genius. She’s a badass. But even though it appears the character has morphed quite a bit from her first live-action appearance in 2009, actress Claire Foy says Lisbeth has stayed true to herself no matter who dons the all-black attire.

September is right around the corner which means a two-fold attack of movies. 1) the wealth of riches that arrives in the more-adult-themed awards season and 2) the overlapping films that appear first during the fall film festival circuit. So, our fall preview essentially doubles for both, a few films here and there missing due to lack of release dates yet. But yes, the Venice Film Festival starts this week, the Telluride Film Festival this weekend and following that a brief reprieve before the Toronto International Film Festival and then the genre-focused Fantastic Fest in Austin and artsy and prestigious New York Film Festival in late September and early October.

It takes a certain fortitude to hold your own against Daniel Day-Lewis, but rising star Vicky Krieps did that and more in “Phantom Thread.” The actress commands the screen in Paul Thomas Anderson‘s new film, guiding audiences through the deliciously romantic and sweetly weird drama, while keeping them always on the edge of the character’s intentions. It’s a wonderful turn by the actress who was spotted by the director in the small German film “The Chambermaid Lynn,” and may only be known to arthouse audiences who have seen her on the festival circuit in fare like the surreal noir “Gutland” and “The Young Karl Marx” (opening soon).

Britton has signed on for “The Girl In The Spider’s Web.” The followup (of sorts) to “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” will have “The Crown” star Claire Foy taking on the role of Lisbeth Salander, with “The Square” star Claes Bang as the villain.
