More SXSW catch-up.

During his SXSW Film Festival Q&A, David Gordon Green revealed a few small, but key details about “Eastbound & Down” the HBO show created by his good filmmaker friends, Ben Best and Jody Hill, starring Danny McBride. The trio were the team behind Hill’s breakthrough film, “The Foot Fist Way” and Will Ferrell and Adam McKay are executive producers on the show. The show, if you haven’t seen it, centers on Kenny Powers (McBride), a former professional baseball pitcher, who after a disappointing career is forced to return to his hometown middle-school in Shelby, North Carolina as a substitute physical education teacher.

A few short weeks ago, we noted that the soundtrack to Jody Hill’s “Observe & Report” starring Seth Rogen as bi-polar and bitter mall cop, looked like it was going to be excellent. Well, we’ve got the exclusive details and yes, pretty much; this is a great and tastefully curated soundtrack that you normally wouldn’t see in a big mainstream Warner Bros. comedy with some nice, off-the-beaten path musical choices (which we always like to see).

Imagine a headline, not as vagues as “Imagine Chuck Norris starring n Boogie Nights.” This is how CHUD tries to sell their mostly-exclusive about “Observe & Report” director Jody Hill claiming he’d like to do a prequel to the Danny McBride breakthrough low-budget comedy, “The Foot Fist Way.” Sigh… (*shakes head*).

AnyHOW, yeah, ‘Foot Fist Way’ wasn’t actually good*, but it did turn Danny McBride into a star. Everyone loved the film (inexplicably), the Judd Apatow crowd adored it so much, they invited him to the set of “Knocked Up,” (which lead to “Pineapple Express” and McBride pal David Gordon Green directing) and Will Ferrell and Adam McKay adored it so much they executive-produced (endorsed the finished product) the film ensuring it got a release in 2008.

Everyone’s cooing over what appears to be a very outrageously dark and vulgar, “Observe & Report” the new Jody Hill-directed comedy starting Seth Rogen and Anna Faris that many were calling the dark version of “Paul Blart,” but now many are calling “Taxi Driver” with a comedic bent (Hill just called ‘Blart’ a “piece of shit” yesterday; Wired called ‘Observe,’ “violently funny“; Matt Dentler said it could be “the craziest studio movie of the year.” ).

Directed by Jody Hill (the promising, but not entirely great, “The Foot Fist Way”), “Observe & Report” promises to be the filthier version of “Paul Blart: Mall Cop” judging by that last R-Rated trailer which was surprisingly good. The film stars Seth Rogen, Anna Faris, Michael Peña, Ray Liotta and Jesse Plemons. Here’s the synop:

At the Forest Ridge Mall, head of security Ronnie Barnhardt (Seth Rogen) patrols his jurisdiction with an iron fist.

Self-control, perseverance, integrity, indomitable spirit–that’s what it’s supposed to be all about!

No one tells us anything. Despite the fact that we were the only fuckers on planet earth who cared to even bother discussing the music and soundtrack to the tae kwon do comedy, “The Foot Fist Way,” somehow, the promotion of that disc was a blatant failure pile and no one notified us of shit.

Anywhooo, last time we wrote about this, we had talked to members of Pyramid, the North Carolina collective that had composed most of the film’s score, a mix of purposefully dated music or what they called, “Iron Eagle II’ meets ‘Karate Kid II’ meets ‘Flash Gordon.’ “

Last we heard a digital-only release was coming later this summer, but it looks like it was released at the end of May and is available now.

Well, “Pineapple Express” and “The Foot Fist Way” aren’t even in theaters yet, but the buzz that both films are generating have already paid off as Universal has just green lit the project.

When youve got comedians like Judd Apatow, Jonah Hill, Will Ferrell and Adam McKay endorsing your new film, you can’t seemingly lose.

Wait, no Vince Vaughn? Case in point: this small omission seems to be Danny McBride’s biggest “problem” at the moment cause everyone else in comedy Tinseltown seems to adore him. Shot two years ago on credit cards, McBride and co.screened the “The Foot Fist Way” at Sundance ’06 and Ferrell and McKay were so damn impressed they snatched the film via their production imprint and got Paramount Vantage to distrib (Comedian Patton Oswalt called the film, “a sui generis work on par with ‘The Big Lebowski‘ “)

Written by McBride, co-star Ben Best and director Jody Hill, “The Foot Fist Way” tells the tale of Fred Simmons, “king of the [instructional] demo” and an inept strip mall tae kwon do instructor who berates his students while trying to impart the wisdom and skills of the martial art he has ‘mastered’ (“Your weakness disgusts me!” Simmons yells at one of his six-year-old students).

Pyramid, the eight-piece moody, orchestral indie collective from North Carolina have scored the upcoming Danny McBride comedy, “The Foot Fist Way.”

McBride is seemingly Hollywood’s favorite new comedian golden boy and this cult film was adored in L.A. circles that Will Ferrell and Adam Mckay (the pair behind “Anchorman” and “Talladega Nights”) quickly snatched in up at Sundance ’06 and compelled Paramount Vantage to back the film’s distribution (fans also include Jonah Hill and much of the Apatow crew, “I’m calling it right now: [McBride]’s the funniest person on the planet,” “Superbad” star Hill declared to EW a few months ago.).

If Ellen Page could have an equivalent that’s an overweight, schlubby male comedian, well then Danny R. McBride is this year’s Ellen Page.

Wait, that doesn’t make any sense. Entertainment Weekly called him the next Will Ferrell, and tons of comedians including Seth Rogen and Ferrell have sung his praises, Danny R. McBride is having a moment. Or at least, he’s about to.

“I’m calling it right now: he’s the funniest person on the planet,” declared “Superbad” star Jonah Hill to EW recently.
