Tilda Swinton has many talents, including performing, producing, collaborating, writing, and dressing up, not to mention expressing herself beautifully on screen and in her choice of language. It’s the second time that I’ve interviewed the performance artist at the Marrakech International Film Festival, and I love how she talks. Speaking the queen’s English with long, fluid, contemplative sentences, she’s the most eloquent person in film. It’s soothing to hear her speak.

From the major marketing fail of the poster for “The Northman” that simply forgot the title to the optical illusions of “Nope” and the inexplicable vintage flair of “Confess Fletch,” those fearing that the art of poster design as exactly that, an art, can and should rest easy. 

There is, as always, a war between contractual obligations that demand certain actors to have a certain amount of pixel space and the desires of innovative artists to do more than just get bums on seats.

Joanna Hogg’s and Tilda Swinton’s creative partnership goes back nearly fifty years. The two became friends when they were only ten years old, and this school friendship eventually led to Hogg casting Swinton as the lead in her (1986) NFTS graduation film, “Caprice,” about a woman stuck in a fashion magazine. More recently, Swinton and her daughter, Honor Swinton Byrne, took on lead roles in Hogg’s critically acclaimed film “The Souvenir” in 2019 and its sequel “The Souvenir: Part II” in 2021.

Still, in the new accelerated age of streaming with HBO Max, Apple TV+, Amazon, Netflix, and all the new players popping up every single day, it seems, the task becomes more and more daunting and nearly impossible (we could have easily gone to 200 this year).

Just about a week ago, it was revealed that Tilda Swinton had found time during lockdown to film a secret feature with filmmaker Joanna Hogg. Details were scarce at the time, but the idea of these two women combining forces again after “The Souvenir” was a pretty great prospect. It appears that A24 has agreed, as the studio has picked up the distribution rights to the feature, now titled “The Eternal Daughter.”
