Emily Blunt is one of the most respected actresses in the world. She’s also a performer who isn’t satisfied doing the same roles over and over. She’ll go from horror (“A Quiet Place”) to action-adventure (“Jungle Cruise”) to sci-fi (“Edge of Tomorrow”). And now, she’s in the new Western, “The English.” But one thing Blunt apparently isn’t looking for in a script is a “strong female lead.”

In a recent interview with The Telegraph, Emily Blunt talked about her new project, the Western series “The English.” And in discussing her character, she opened up about one of her pet peeves with many scripts nowadays—the strong female lead.

It is safe to say that Westerns are having another moment on TV and in film. From the expanding “Yellowstone” universe to “The Power of the Dog,” there is renewed interest in this classic genre. Not that the wild west has ever truly gone away, but the range of stories being told reveals the breadth of the open range. Enter British writer-director Hugo Blick (“The Honourable Woman,” “Black Earth Rising”) with a thrilling six-part limited series, “The English,” starring Emily Blunt as aristocratic Englishwoman Lady Cornelia Locke and Chaske Spencer playing a Pawnee ex-cavalry scout Eli Whipp. 

Early on, it becomes clear that this story of revenge and staking a claim on identity are not mutually exclusive.

Perhaps sensing that the movie release slate in November would overwhelm many of us, television has slowed down (a touch) with most of the month, including returns of TV favorites. While shows like the much debated and buzzed about “The Crown” will see dominance in the discourse, there are also shows such as “Mythic Quest,” which has been overshadowed by some of its more audience-friendly streaming peers (like “Ted Lasso”) and “Gangs of London” which created a small but loyal following in its first season. 

While “Andor” ends this month, Disney+ has a new, nostalgia-filled series to take its place with the premiere of “Willow,” a sequel to the 1988 original film.
