Tomorrow morning, the Oscar nominations will be announced, but as is tradition, the folks at the Razzie Awards are riding the Academy’s coattails. The group has issued their nominations for the worst that 2017 had to offer, and everyone will argue about these entirely meaningless and pretty dumb awards anyway.

Certainly, you can’t debate their selections for Worst Picture: “Baywatch,” “The Emoji Movie,” “Fifty Shades Darker,” “The Mummy,” “Transformers: The Last Knight” (which earned the most nods with nine) were indeed all regrettable pictures.

It’s Christopher Nolan‘s birthday, and the fussy director has a nice present waiting for him when he reads the box office news with his morning cup of tea.

“Dunkirk” has taken the top spot at the box office for the second straight week. Strong reviews and great word of mouth allowed the WWII movie to keep hold at multiplexes, with an impressive week-to-week drop of only 44%.

One of the strangest new stories to really pick up traction this spring has been T.J. Miller‘s exit from “Silicon Valley.” The comic actor has been on a weirdly involved press tour to explain why he left the hit show, and the main reason is that he wanted more time to pursue other gigs….like “The Emoji Movie.”

I have no words — or emojis — to express how I actually feel about this, but if you ever wanted a full-length feature film about those little faces and icons you send to friends, well, I guess this is for you.

“The Emoji Movie” lines up a pretty decent array of voice actors, and takes audiences into the secret world of your smartphone, where emojis live and are burdened with having to make the same face all the time.

We try to keep our annual preview to the films that we’re truly excited about, which means that there’s a lot left on the table. And often, it means that we don’t include some of the films destined to be among the biggest grossers.

Perhaps one can understand why Martin Scorsese and Pedro Almodovar weep for the state of contemporary cinema: we’re getting a movie starring emojis. We won’t go so far as to say film is dead, but certainly, commerce and brand leverage are really taking the fore at the studio level.

Anyway, this animated effort brings those icons on your phone to life with T.J Miller, Ilana Glazer and James Corden leading the voice cast, that follows an emoji who is burdened with the flaw of being able to express more than one emotion.
